Yeah, they could have kept him for the rest of the season and playoffs before FA at a song since he only makes 485.9 K this year, but isnt this belichicks style to show a player who the boss is, and he's expendable? and the pick the browns gave them is a compensatory pick at the end of the round, word is, according to USA Today,
That Collins will hit free agency come March and will command massive money. New England had the option of potentially using the franchise tag – expected to be at around $15 million for linebackers – but the team clearly felt the future cost was too much to bear.

And then there’s this: According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Collins was seeking “Von Miller money.”

Miller signed a six-year, $114.5 million agreement this offseason that is the most lucrative contract in league history for a defender. That’s quarterback money, and the Patriots typically don’t give out that kind of coin.

did they ever say how the Browns know they have a 3rd round Comp. pick? I thought those were determined in the offseason

I thought so as well, but I read this from sports illustrated:

The compensation is puzzling because it’s only a third-round pick, and it’s not even the Browns’ selection that would most likely be the first pick in the round. It’s a compensatory selection at the bottom, which will be tradable for the first time this year.

Brady probably has the fastest release time in the NFL..His quick passing negates poor OL play ..His passes are usually pin point accurate allowing for lots of yac yardage....We have to spend to much money to protect Ben and spend a lot to get him serious weapons with a great catch radius ....

Not a knock on Ben , but he is a big part of why we are not a solid Team, we have focused so much on him and the OL and WR'S we have very little left for better depth players ...On Defense we value the LB position to much and don't value the DB position enough ...

I would rather have what the Pats have they have better bu's at almost every position that counts...They have proved they can win without the QB and look to be dominate with him ...Bottom line is if a choice between Brady and Ben the smart and the correct choice is Brady every time ...Not then Ben is not good , but he is no Brady...

Yea, I read the same thing (about asking for Von miller money). I just assumed it's PR nonsense put out by the Patriots.... It makes no sense.

I agree with what you are saying but we aren't talking about swapping the whole team. We/I am saying if you swap Ben and Brady on this team that we have right now I want Brady. Look not to long ago we had one of the worst olines and Ben never complained, he stuck by them no matter how much of a beating he took. Under BA he was one of the most hit QB's in the league do you think Brady would last like that, I don't. I feel the only other QB I would want on this team as it sits right now is Rodgers. JMO

I would have liked to have traded Wheaton for something...DHB has moved up the depth chart and is ahead of him now ,I don't think he had a lot of value ,but could have used a 4th. or 5th. round pick as leverage in this upcoming draft ...Instead he will take up practice time from the young WR'S and offer very little on the field ....

Lol why would any team give up any pick (let along a solid 4th or 5th) for a pending UFA who is injured and hardly played this year?

No one would flush a pick down the toilet like that.

Detroit just gave up a 7th to Tampa for Johnthan Banks whose contract is up at the end of the year and he hasn't played a snap all season.

Fair point, but 37 starts at CB is much harder to find than a depth WR. Every team in the league has players of Wheaton's caliber... on their practice squad.

I don't even think about trades because the Steelers generally don't do it. Just to put it in perspective, during the season, how many trades have happened in say the last 10 years? From what I can find, it generally covers 5-7 round draft pick as? It does not include anything if great value, let alone a pass rusher or quarterback of any value. Well, other than a 5-7 round draft pick.

It's simple really. They trade him to the Browns because that gives them a better chance to beat us with 2 games on the schedule.....after they play us ,he walks off the field ala Blount ,he gets released and he's back on the roster by the playoffs.......gotta find new ways to Cheat or beat the system.

Some Teams are hurting bad at the WR spot, plus he does have a couple of huge games on tape ..I think a Team would risk a 4th. or 5th. rounder on him ...A lot of pundits and people on this board thought he would have a breakout year as did his QB...So the sell would be pretty easy to make IMO...

eh... the Steelers are hurting at WR... Would you trade a 4th round pick for Jaron Brown (Pending UFA)? Maybe Quinton Patton? Corey Brown?

The sell would be easy to make because Wheaton failed to meet expectations... again... and is currently working his way back from injury??? If you could sell a bum shoulder WR who failed to live up to expectations... kudos to you.

No one is buying these guys... get real.

I would have sold him while he was healthy, and I do believe he had 4th. or 5th. round value at that time ..And if we didn't have talented depth at WR and a stud starter then yes I would give up a 4th. or 5th. for any of those 3 ...We don't have a talent problem at the WR position and a lot of Teams do...
