Lets say, knowing what we know now, that the Steelers are on the clock and are ready to draft their next star player in the 1st round. You have available to you, TJ Watt, Troy Polamalu, and Rod Woodson. Do you take the Safety, Corner, or OLB? I was thinking about this the other day, and I really don't know what I would do. Thoughts?

    ... Sheesh man.....

Good question. It really depends on how the defense is constructed by that point. Whichever piece is needed most of course but even then, can go a number of ways. Might have to take Rod overall even though I love Troy so much.

Troy may be one of the greatest Safeties ever but Rod Woodson is continually (and will continue to ve) on the short list for being the greatest ever Cornerback. For that matter, say hello to the God Father of the Modern Chess Piece of DBs.

Hot Rod could do everything both Noll and Cowher ever wanted then some from a Coverage standpoint.

Woodson. In your hypothetical, we'd know the longevity of his career which would be factored into the pick. Another factor is that he wasn't too shabby as a punt returner either.

It's not really fair putting Watt against 2 guys with a whole body of work to examine while we can only judge TJ by half a career. It would be more interesting if you'd have made Lambert or Ham the 3rd option instead of Watt.

woodson...you have above avg proven talent at OLB (highsmith) and safety (minkah)....avg to below avg at the corner spots and in a throwing league you need lockdown corners to help offset that.

It has to be Woodson. Honestly, it's not even a difficult decision. You don't pass on the Hall of Fame cornerback, not in a pass-heavy league like it is now.

seriously though, troy. he played all over the field, while woodson would shut down a receiver or half the field, troy could play everywhere and did, even against the run.

Polamalu needed the freedom to do as he pleased. In a sense, at least part of the time, the defensive scheme planned the role for 10 players and let Polamalu follow his instincts. That led to some spectacular plays, but also some big mistakes. He also missed some big tackles. He also wasn't great at man-to-man coverage. Don't get me wrong. It was all worth it, but he had to have a certain defensive structure around him to be effective.

Woodson was a steadier presence. He still make more than his share of big plays, but he did it within the defense. He was also a hell of a run defender, too, providing a physical presence in the secondary.

Qb can't throw from his back..... a strong pass rush makes the secondary look better than it is, so my pick is Watt

Since it's hypothetical I tell Mason Cole to take a seat and start the new guy Mike Webster.

Listen to Dick Lebeau when he said he asked God for one more player to coach and he said Troy was a blend of Rod and Carnell lake. Having said that, Rod could cover, play the run, blitz the qb and was a returner so he was crazy good so as others have said my heart says Troy but my head says Rod. On a side note what peeved me about Rod was the Steelers wanted him to shift to Safety and he didn't want to. So he goes to SFO and plays CB then to Balt to CB and then shifted to safety. I was so mad when he left because him, Kevin G and Franco are the guys that team should never have let go but I also thought it was time for him to move to safety.

Always one of the DBs. Easy answer for Me. LoL. No sweat towards Watt because He's a beast, and a half, but I'm a corner safety dude. So a DB

I think there was more to his departure, at least to hear Woodson tell the story. That said, I think part of it was simply that he wasn't ready to make the move yet, but a few years later, he decided he was willing to do it to prolong his career.
