Woodson, or Lakes place.....Just because everyone else was part of Championship wins, and SBs. If I had to that's how I would do it.

    1. Mel Blount
    2. Troy Polamalu
    3. Rod Woodson
    4. Donnie Shell
    5. Ike Taylor

One thing on Mel Blount, I look at lot of guys from the 70s etc. and be like could they play today?? Some of them I look at and I'm not so sure some of them would of had the same success.

Mel Blount could play today, he was built unreal. Plus they basically made up PI for reasons like him, because of how he played.
Heck I look at Mel Blount today and for a guy in his 70s, he is in unreal shape.

Also amazing out of possible 208 Regular season games he played in 200 games. From Rookie season on...
The 7 of the 8 games he missed were in his next to last season in 1982, when he had a season ending injury.
He also played in 19 post season games.
Unreal talent of always playing and never missing a contest.
    Durable Mel Blount

    My list as well.

Again and, let it be known Troy that, Mel's greatest accomplishments came after the very rule that was supposed to outlaw him in 1977. Why modern Sports Writers and Media love to shortchange him I have not the foggiest.... other than the usual $$$.

I'd have no issues with listing Ike above Lake, but dude isn't remotely close to the level Rod played at.

To be clear, you believe that Taylor was better than Woodson?

We are too stacked historically at most positions to generalize a position group like db.... we should split it between cb's and safeties

    Exactly.
Mel had a rule made to damage him, and still succeeded.
But he also would hit, and hit hard. To where he would literally spear (like rugby spear).
Interceptions were up there as well.
He was truly an all around CB.

Good list and it’s hard to argue with it. I hear a lot about whether certain players from the 70s could play today and you’re spot on about Blount. The only issue with him is that he was so physical that he might have a tough time adapting to today’s game where you’re called for PI if you breathe on a receiver. But I’m sure he could adapt. I also hear a lot that linebackers like Lambert and Ham couldn’t play in today’s NFL because they’re too small and too slow. Shoot, Joe Greene was a lightweight too compared to todays standards. I think his playing weight was around 275 and unless you’re at or about 300 today as a DT you’re smallish. But here’s the thing, if those players played today, and they had access to the nutritional programs and speed strength and agility training that today’s players have, they’d be every bit as successful because they’d be bigger, stronger and faster versions of themselves and still have the heart and desire to be the best players at their respective positions. Bottom line is this…YES, many of the great Steelers players of the 70s could play today if they had all of the advantages of today’s athletes from a nutritional and training standpoint.

Or have a top 5 of each decade. Some of the players that would have been superstars had the team been a bit better all around often get missed out of these things.
