Is Bruce Arians the only coach that has served on Tomlin's staff that went on to serve as a head coach? And Arians did that after he was forced out, went to another organization, then went on to be a head coach. Is there anyone else?

This tells me that the Steelers do not have great assistant coaches. It also shows that in 12 years as head coach, Tomlin isn't inspiring or leading his assistants to greater heights. In fairness, I do not recall many of Chuck Noll's assistants becoming head coaches. Cowher had Whisehunt, but I can't think of others. Belicheck's assistants for the most part have not had much success as head coaches.

To be fair, it doesn't seem like Tomlin has had the opportunity to pick coordinators. I believe Arians was on Cowher's staff, as was LeBeau. Then Butler was promoted, and Rooney picked Haley as OC. Fitchner was probably more a Ben pick than a Tomlin hire. So I guess if this was food for thought, I think we are all still hungry.

Tomlin can't even coach himself...He's gonna inspire other coaches?

Tomlin has M. Munchak who most probably would have been Cardinals coach if he wanted to.

Tomlin is still a young coach. Many of the coaches that coached under him are/were older than him.

Didn’t even know he was a Steelers linebacker coach but what is more baffling is being the bengals coach for 15 years now

In the OP's defense, he really didn't need to find an excuse, there's plenty of prime examples.

It is hard for Tomlin to develop coaches since he really only has a loose interpretation of a football blue print. He isn't like a Walsh or Shannhan. He doesn't have a set scheme that he can pass on like the West Coast Offense and 46 defense. To him each season is a separate entity unto itself. Each is revealed as the season plays out. He doesn't mold his team into his vision and build on it each year. This part of the reason you see them struggle year after year against lesser teams because the team isnt built to dominate and destroy.

So when you are talking about passing on your scheme to the staff there really isn't anything solid to have them learn. There is demand for some of them but ithey is based on overall performance.

None of Belichick former assistants hasn't accomplished anything in the NFL either, OP won't mention that though.

Other than the last line of the second paragraph, I did not mention it. Rules6, why do you think Tomlin doesn't have a coaching tree? I stated some reasons why, because he has not hired the coordinators, but how come some position coaches haven't become coordinators for other teams? Thorn058 gave a reasonable explanation. By the way, I am not in the fire Tomlin camp. I would like to see him have success and get to another Super Bowl.

We thank their organization for accepting mediocrity year after year.

All Bengals fans feel the same way. Talked to a Bengal fan less than 2 hours ago and he expressed much appreciation for Tomlin as a head coach and the organization. I told him many Steelers fans are ready to run him out of town.

Yeah living off of Belichick's rep, they all failed too. Except for Bill O'Brien is doing alright with Houston.
