just curious to see what everyone thinks of this?

Coach Tomlin has 2 Super Bowl appearances. Do you think he will eventually match Bill Belichik's 5 Super Bowl appearances?

    your thoughts

I think it is a distinct possibility. The Steelers are better than almost any other team at re-loading instead of re-building. Over the last 40 years, though we have had some periods of mediocrity, the Steelers have been the winningest team in the NFL with more playoff appearances, division titles, playoff wins, you name it, than any other team. This is significant in predicting the future.

If the Steelers pattern of the past continues, I would expect that we could see quite a few Super Bowl appearances for this team. Much of it depends on whether or not we'll be able to change quarterbacks on the fly like we have other positions, but assuming that, the team is built for the longhaul.

Personally, I think that Belicheat's true test will be when it's time to replace Marsha. When that happens, we'll see how he does. His own history suggests that he'll be fine, given the 11-5 season recently when Lady missed the entire season. However, that will be a test for him.

I think that we are truly at the beginning of what will be a sustained competitive, if not dominant period for the Steelers. While the pundits criticize various aspects of the Steelers (old and slow), they seem to be just ramping up for a number of years that continue the tradition of excellence.

Just my opinion - biased as it is. :)

See this is where establishing a winning culture breeds spoildness because I expect us to be in the SB every year :good: Of course, I know that is not very likely, but I do fully expect Tomlin to see 3 more SB's, a victory in each hopefully. With the Rooneys penchant for retaining their head coaches for long periods of time, Tomlin should have the opportunity to accomplish that. :herewego:

As long as Steelers have Ben and they at least make the playoffs they have a chance of going to the SB every year.

Ben needs to stay healthy it should be priority number 1 to keep him healthy. Time to invest in the o-line

What I want in the next few years is one of those years where the Steelers are dominant for a whole season. The team is capable of producing something like that. I know everything has to fall your way for it to happen, but I really need a season like that.

Heck I'd take dominance for a whole game = 60 min :lolol:

Start with one the others will follow!

True enough - but I'm thinking big picture. I really need one of those types of seasons.

Well, Tomlin will be here for a while (trends here are that coaches last very long). Ben still has a lot of football left.

So, to get 3 more SBs in a 10+- year span (even with ben retiring before that span) seems probable.

I don't know?I hope Tomlin and Co. continue to win and make it too 3 more Super Bowls?Depends on the team making smart decisions and drafting well?History has shown that the Steelers will adjust and be competitive as always.Time will tell.I hope we maintain that toughness that has always been our trademark.Kinda hard to maintain with Goodell changing the game towards the Offense side of the ball.

No, honestly I don't see it happening. I can see one or maybe two, but we've got some major holes that need filling before declaring Tomlin anywhere near Bellicheat.

I think it's possible. The Steelers are transitioning from the old team to the new one per se and instead of just blowing the whole thing up they've been doing it gradually (forced to by injuries in some cases) but I think the youth movement will be in full swing next season and there won't be too many rookies in that movement. A soild team that's younger and faster is never a bad thing.

Since there's only been 3 coaches in the last 43 years, I think it's entirely possible.
3 coaches in 43 years! Incredible! :towel:

Hey, maybe if the league starts changing its rules to suit Tomlin's team, as it has with Belichick's over the past half decade, anything is possible.

As difficult as it is to make it to the Super Bowl - we are spoiled - as Steelers fans to have a team that has made it, on average, to more than one out of every eight! It is beyond comprehension that this team has been THE dominant team over the past 40 years. People talk about Belichek and his run - but no other team has shown the kind of dominance that the Steelers have over such a sustained period. This is a tribute to the ORGANIZATION - and since that is not changing, I think we have the potential to remain in the mix every year. In the playoffs, anything can happen. So, since we're always in the playoff conversation, that means that trips to the Super Bowl can and will happen - unless - the Steelers lay an egg replacing Ben when he's done.

Offensive line, do I really need to elaborate?
Defensive line (no pressure on QB, need Snack replacement and someone to replace ziggy)
    Farrior's replacement
Corner back, we've drafted plenty but one of the young guys needs to step up their game
Running back, maybe redman will suffice... maybe he won't, mendy is as good as done since he'll be recovering most of next season "not playing" for a contract
I'd even say Safety, troy or ryan's replacements. Sorry Mundy won't cut it (see Bronco's game).

Our defensive starters are aging and having a hard time staying healthy, even though Troy will only be 31, his style will shorten his career, I can't see him playing until he's 36/37 like Farrior.

Ben's probably got no more than 5 years left in him. So in the next 3-5 years we'll likely be losing Big Ben, Farrior (our defensive field brains), Troy, Ryan Clark, Ike taylor, casey hampton, keisel, aaron smith, etc etc etc

So in the next 5 years are there people here saying we are going to win 3 more superbowls? Am I the only one not on crack? Okay, in theory, yes it "could" happen... but realistically, no team has been that dominant since they allowed illegal video taping of practices.

O line is alot closer then you think, last 2 seasons they have added Pouncey and Gilbert and I'm sure they will address it further in this years draft.

    # 1 defense in the league, not sure what else you are looking for. Led NFL in fewest yards allowed (271.8) points allowed (14.2 per game) and passing yards (171.9 per game). The D is least of our concerns and always our strength. I agree, takeaways were lacking but last year we led the league in that catergory, it was the same team so I chalk it up as a fluke. As for pressure, JH and Woodley were rarely on the field together which is a big reason for that. That and the fact they tweaked the defense to protect agains the pass more which in turn took away some of the pressure they could put on the QB.

Running backs is a position of strength, with Redman, Dwyer, Clay and Batch, again, not sure what you are looking for.

Total speculation about Ben, you don't know that.

I didn't see anyone say we'd win 3 more SB 's in the next 5 years??? The question was can Tomlin match Belichicks 5 SB's.

I would have to say you are the only one who is ON crack after reading your post

I think Tomlin has a good chance to coach in 5 Super Bowls before he retires. I think Tomlin will be around for the next 15 years. Our franchise is one of stability and I believe that he is a good fit for the team and the city. He has a passion for football and the players love him. While the Rooneys seem to have gone over his head with the BA situation, I genuinely believe that they think he is the right man for the job as well.

He is not even 40 years old yet and I don't see him retiring young like Cowher did. Cowher exhausted himself chasing that Lombardi...I believe it took so much out of him with all of those devastating playoff losses to finally get to the top of the mountain. It was evident he lost his passion during the 2006 year that lead up to his retirement. Coach T has already one a title. He's since lost one as well, which makes that desire to get back and win burn even stronger. I don't feel that coaching will take as much of an exhausing toll on Tomlin as it did Cowher since he won early in his career.

Like others have said, this team is built to compete consistently. Even if there are bad years, we bounce back quicker than most. Generally, we play well in the playoffs and play great football when it counts. We've been to 3 SB's in the last 7 years and I see no reason why we won't go to 3 more in the next decade. That's how we do it in Pittsburgh!
