Brian Baldinger recently listed his Top 3 Most Underrated Coaches in the league and it went like this.

    3. John Fox

    2. Bruce Arians

    1. Mike Tomlin

His logic is that Tomlin has accomplished a ton with teams that have even been decimated by injuries. He said he's a great motivator and "never makes excuses". It seems really odd to hear a coach that has won a Super Bowl and been to another one be called underrated. What do you think?

The only bozos that think Tomlin is a bad coach are some of the locals in our fan base. I hate to say it, but I think it might have a racial component to it because, otherwise, it just doesn't make sense to hate on a guy with a Super Bowl ring (in two appearances), the highest winning percentage in team history, and has never had a losing season. Expectations in the Burgh have gotten out of control. Winning it all every year isn't realistic. There are other damn good teams out there every season and we're in the one of the toughest decisions.

Regarding the USA Today list . . .

*I'd take Tomlin over Sean Payton.
*Packers fans, by and large, can't stand Mike McCarthy.
*I think John Fox is greatly overrated (so does John Elway now).
*I think Bill O'Brien should be near the bottom of this list.
*I think Chip Kelly should also be near the bottom of this list (Iggles fans will agree).
*I think Rex Ryan should be higher. I think he's a pretty good coach. He's had some good success with the Jets and Bills and has done it with, basically, a Landry Jones at each stop.
*Hue Jackson might be one of the better coaches in the league but he doesn't stand a chance.
*I think Jason Garrett is in over his head.
*It's amazing how far Jeff Fisher has fallen. People used to consider HIM a genius (in his Tennessee days).

You have to realize the sports media had him on the hot seat because 8-8 means a team is mediocre at best, once is OK but twice sets off the alarm button with the media, but of course the team owners are all that matters, but two other coaches had 3 peat 8-8 seasons and kept their jobs, marv lewis and jason garret, so an 8-8 once in awhile is over looked but redundant 8-8s are a concern especially for the fan base, I might add that garett and lewis are in jeopardy of losing their jobs after this season if they dont get to the playoffs and in lewis's case he has to win in the playoffs since he is on a 1 year extension that says he better win or he is gone.....

Anybody with common sense knows that although, on paper, the ingredients looked impressive, Tomlin was cooking with some stale pieces in his 8-8 regimes.

    Hines was done.
    Troy was done.
    Hampton was done.
    Farrior was done.
    Ike was done.
    Aaron Smith was done.
    Joey Porter was done.
    Foote was done.
    Woodley was worthless.
    Wallace was gone.
    Mendenhall was gone.

We had no running back, an overrated prima donna wr (Wallace), Pouncey couldn't stay on the field, our defense was an old folks' home and, still, we finished .500. In a tough division, nonetheless.

It was like watching our '81-'82 teams. Yeah, we had Bradshaw, Stallworth, Lambert, Swann, Webster, Ham, Blount . . . so how come we went 8-8 in '81 and 6-3 in '82? How does that happen with that much HOF talent on the roster, hurr de durr?

And then Tomlin got rid of the dead weight, brought in some new studs, and we're back in contention.

MAJOR props to Tomlin from the Burro camp for getting us through the storm and quickly back into contention!

EXACTLY...you couldnt have said it any better.
tomlin won with cowhers players in their prime and he was mediocre with cowhers aqing players.
now that tomlin has most of his own players(except ben) he is showing what type of coach he is. he has been part of putting some nice pieces together the last few years, but cant win but 1 playoff game recently. this team is so loaded this year, there really wont be any reason not to win it all.

I agree with you. Couple things though. Porter never played for Tomlin and Ward was gone before those 8-8 seasons.

Yeah and before last year you and the other haters were saying "Tomlin can't win a playoff game". Now he wins a game and it's "Tomlin can't win more than one playoff game"

Your Cowher's players argument was relevant like 5 years ago. Time to move on to something else.

duh, until last year tomlin didnt win a playoff game in 4 years. now he won 1 in 5 and you think thats great.
yup, you are correct.. 5 years ago and before, tomlin won a super bowl and lost a super bowl with cowhers players.
until ben leaves, it will still be relevant

You were the inspiration behind my earlier "hurr de durr" quote.

Your trolling has jumped the shark, so to speak. Your nonsense is transparent and I'm over it. I don't suffer fools. I'll let the others play with ya.

It's fair to say Tomlin's stock is rising. Winning in the playoffs will do that for you. The team rebuilt and retooled. Tomlin has led the ship and he is ranked higher than I would expect him to have been last year. Where he be next year? At number one I hope. But there's only one way to do that and I am ready for it.

That's what I was gonna say. Cowher's last year was Peezy's last Steeler year as well.

Never said it was great, just that you haters are never happy.
And "until Ben leaves" That's a huge fail.
Name a NFL coach who doesn't have somebody else's player.
    I'll be waiting Troll.

I have no problem with the debate that Tomlin inherited a Superbowl winning team from Cowher. Like 10 years ago. I just don't get this guys obsession with digging up old topics. What's next, a debate of the Revolutionary war?

again, yes i am biased but of course tomlin is underrated. to some he will always live in cowhers shadow. I think he is a hell of a coach. does he have his short comings?...absolutely(who dosent) but i wouldn't want any other coach

You made the point for me in your post above. Thats what I meant, every coach inherits another coaches players, it's meaningless, still have to coach them.

And Tomlin has done a good job. We kept that Super bowl team intact for quite a while for the most part. We may have neglected a few area's as far as replacing some of those great players in doing so. A price you pay for trying to win another title.
Tomlin and Colbert have done a very nice job of staying competitive while reloading the talent.
Tomlin's career is pretty similar to Cowher's in the way that Cowher inherited a very talented team from Noll and won right away then had a few down years (two losing seasons) before rebuilding the team for a Super bowl run. Which is what Tomlin is currently doing.

Heck Cowher couldn't even win with Cowher's players some years.

Again for the guy who can't let go of the past. This whole debate took place dam near a decade ago. If he was going for fashionably late he missed the mark.

Who cares, it's the NOW that matters, camp opens in 20 days and this is probably the most talented athletic team to report to camp in 10 years, probably the best crop of rookies to show up in years and our most talented O line in years, and with the best competition set for the backup QB position in years, the competition will be intense at every position except starting QB, this team is our best one to show up in camp for a long time and this season should be one hell of an exciting ride for all of us fans to remember for a long time, and maybe even a super bowl is in the cards.....

almost every coach has someone elses players. i never said they didnt. but the tomlin nuthuggers want to say he won the super bowl with his player and it was his team. no it wasnt. it was cowhers players that he won with.
now that most of cowhers players are gone, tomlin can start calling this his team with his players. so far tho, he sure hasnt won anything with his guys.
    got it, tard?
