I am a bit torn. I really like how we rebounded last season after some silly losses (Tampa, Browns, Jets). However, we did have those utter stinkers against weaker opponents and a pathetic playoff performance. I don't think he's top 3 by any stretch, but I would be hard pressed to find anyone available who I would advocate as a plug and play replacement. So while I certainly wouldn't send him packing, I also question extending him through 2018 when the past few years have featured some bad losses and head scratching decisions. I'd like to see at least a playoff win before extending him that far out.

He's already proven he can win playoff games, he's won the biggest game of them all. He's not Marvin Lewis.

You can look at the team and see how much it has improved and it hasn't reached its potential yet. And its only a 2 year extension.

What can I say... some people choose to only look at the good and dismiss the bad as being outide of his control. Others choose to focus on the bad and ignore the positives. I choose to look at the full picture. When I look at the full picture, my gut tells me that I would prefer to see this season play out before making a decision. I like how we finished last regular season, but outside of that the past 3 years have been substandard IMO.

I am looking at the whole picture, I see much improvement. You'll never eradicate bad losses, they're gonna happen. This is standard MO for Rooneys, I believe they extend their coaches with 2 years remaining if I'm not mistaken.

I think last years rebound is what got Tomlin his extension. If he had produced another 8-8 season there would be a completely different conversation right now.

Tomlin is a good coach, these next three years will determine his ultimate classification by fans. Why a two year extension.?? Because it ties him to Big Ben.

Ben is signed thru 2019... his final two yrs look like this.....

Year.. Base.. Prorated Bonus.. Roster Bonus.. Dead Money... Cap saving
    18' 5mil 6.2 mil 12 mil 12.4 mil 10.8 mil
    19' 5mil 6.2 mil 12 mil 6.2 mil 17 mil

If Ben starts declining after the next three years ( 15'-16'-17' ) his next two years will be in jeopardy. Tomlin will be here thru 18' meaning yr 19 is now interesting. If we don't perform at a high caliber, bring back the Lombardi Trophy here where it belongs then we can hire a New Head Coach, not tie him to an old Expensive QB, cut Ben, save 17 mil on the cap and rebuild OR Start the QB we've developed over the previous 2/3 seasons and continue our dominance...hopefully.

Can I ask how you felt when Cowher and Noll both had a string of bad seasons? Other then Ben and Miller last season was all about Tomlin's players. Cowher's players were more of a hindrance. The future looks bright for this team and I fully expect another good year this year. Also can you really consider Ben a Cowher guy since he didn't want him. I consider him a Colbert/Rooney guy.

Good post and I agree. I really think though that we are now seeing the true transition between Arians and Haley and how it is now developing into one of the most productive offenses in the league. If the defense matches then it will be hard to stop this team.

Agree....with the exception of waiting to seasons end. Commit to Tomlin & Ben, see what the new defense is going to look like since he isn't now restrained by a Legend.... its on him NOW. Tell the team and ALL these young guys Tomlin is here, get on board and go win another Trophy. It really is our best option right now and if it doesn't work we can rehire, rebuild with a clean slate in a few years. Let the General do his job!!!

I'm not defending the guy, because that wasn't the right thing to do. But you can tell me you've never lost it and told somebody where to stick it before? It happens,
On another note though that guy has been picking fights around here for the last few weeks kind of knew it was going to happen sooner or later.

Tomlins 1st Superbowl Victory was with mostly Cowhers players yet Tomlin gets the credit. The past few years may have been down years with cowhers aging players and Cowhers DC but Tomlin gets the blame here as well. He's the HC and gets the Glory and becomes the Goat!!

I think the future is Bright as well, we Will bring home the Trophy shortly and the FO has positioned itself if it doesn't happen a new start can happen without the new regime being handcuffed.

I never felt bad about either Noll or Cowher. I also felt fantastic about Tomlin until the 0-4 start to 2013 and the horrid 5th loss (to the Raiders ) that put a big fat nail into our coffin. That season was when I started looking at Tomlin with a more critical eye, and when I started to do that I was hard pressed to think of him as being in the Bellichick, Harbaugh, etc class of top tier coaches. He was great at taking an intact powerhouse and knowing NOT to change things when they're working, but until the latter part of last season I saw zero evidence that he had any clue how to develop a team into a powerhouse. I also have to wonder how much of last year's rebuilding success on offense had to do with Tomlin, and how much was the 3 B's and Haley carrying the team. The team from the first half of Tomlin's tenure needed him to stay out of the way, and I credit him for doing that and not making a point of putting his "stamp" on everything. Now the team needs a coach that can build, and it's far from clear to me that he's a builder. That's why I said that I'd prefer to see another year play out. I'm pretty darn optimistic about this season, and expect a great season. If that happens, I will give Tomlin huge props. However, it wouldn't be the least bit surprising to me if we miss the playoffs again and can point to 2 or 3 games that we had no business losing as the difference. That's unfortunately part of the recent track record, and it needs to get fixed for this team to take the next step.

I'm no choir boy, I'm passionate about things and can be hotheaded and have no problem with debating or defending but His response was totally uncalled for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If nothing else, I'm sure Tomlin will provide plenty of Bulletin Board material for us to all get fired up over.... :roflmao: I am not a hater, nor a lover, but to me it's just a head scratcher as this team seems to be destined for mediocrity under Tomlin. They are capable of being a strong team at times, and incapable of putting bad teams away..... and the biggest issue for me is that they have not won a playoff game in 5 years. I also know that Cowher had his issues that drove me nuts too, but as far as I know, his longest streak without a playoff win was less than 5 years..... and Coach Noll..... well, is no comparison to either.

With the new kinder gentler NFL I think Tomlin is the right guy for the job. You need a coach that can motivate guys to work on their own to get better. Long gone are the days when you could run a drill over and over and over until they get it right. Now you have to really teach with the little time you get to actually practice. In addition you have college guys coming in that are having to learn a whole new system with less hands on than in years past. I think that is why you see more defensive guys take longer to develop than offensive guys. On defense you could be playing a DE in college and end up an OLB at the pros. Where as on offense there is not nearly as much position movement.

Glad to see him signed to an extension. While I don't always agree with the gameplan or his calls I believe he is perfect for this new NFL that Goodell has tried to impose.

I would say most of MTs success came from his assistant coaches, the OC and DC coaches do the work and MT gets the glory, here is a surprising stat, Bruce Arians had the highest winning percentage of any OC in steeler history, so you have to wonder why tomlin fired him, was it strictly because of fan displeasure with BA, I really dont understand tomlins head coaching ability, does he do whats in the teams best interest, or does he do what is the most popular with the fans ?????

I think everything that needs to be said about the incident has been said.

But WHY did I have to be out all day yesterday and miss it?!?!?! :lolol:

As for Tomlin, it's no secret that his honeymoon is over for me. But I did appreciate the turnaround last year despite the defense being atrocious.

Get the D fixed, start winning games were SUPPOSED to win, and I'll be happy and quiet. Don't? And this better be his last contract.

I think it was because of the Rooney's displeasure with him. I think they felt like his playbook was putting Ben in too much danger of getting injured and that's why he was let go. That's just my theory on it.

Tomlin didn't fire him, Rooneys "retired" him.

Head coaches benefit from their assistants, thats what they are there for. Thats not a situation unique to Tomlin.

Hope I don't get flamed too badly, but I'm gonna say it anyway. I have always maintained that is the case with every team. Head Coach is the organizer, the overseer and the motivator. The OC and DC are the ones installing the game plans and making the play calls. The assistants and position coaches teach technique and execution to the players directly.

This might go over like a lead balloon but I think Head Coach probably has the least effect on wins and losses out of the entire coaching staff. However, it's his name attached to them so he has to take the heat or get the accolades. I think it's just the nature of the beast.

Did you really convince yourself that NE's success comes from cheating? Because it's been nearly a decade since spygate, and come on-the deflated football stuff is inconsequential..

Either way, in my mind the lack of playoff wins and the stray sideline leg should've prevented an overeager contract extension.

Having said that, I don't really care given that HC's don't count against the salary cap. Our overeager loyalty to players costs much more

First of all, we make fun of NE here a lot and dont have many good things to say about them. Its a Steelers board, go figure.

Secondly, did you really convince yourself that they haven't benefitted from cheating? Likewise that the only two times they got caught are the only two times they have cheated? Come on man.

You're right about the cap though, which is another reason why I don't get the angst over the extension, if he falls on his face this year, they can still fire him with no repercussions.

He's got the team headed in the right direction though, no reason not to extend him.
