I think the FO is taking a wait and see approach on how this year turns out...why else would it be for only one year

I might have been prematurely harsh with Tomlin.

Last weekend I played golf with a Pittsburgh executive who flies on the team plane to a few away games every year. I see him every year in this tournament, and while riding with him I asked how long Tomlin's three-ring-circus will be tolerated and he simply responded "Tomlin is operating in the environment that Rooney and Colbert have given him......he's not going anywhere"

The extension appears to mirror a player's one yr prove it deal

Obviously they didn't live in their fears of a long-term contract extension because a single year contract standard is the standard.

If a player signed a one year extension when they still had a year on their deal, then yeah, I guess it is like that. That isn't really a prove it deal though.

I believe the one year extension serves two purposes. 1. Art Rooney II is saying we support our coach. 2. We are only giving you a one year extension for now. Have a successful 2019 and a longer extension will be added next year.

Yep. They want a distraction free year, so kick the prospective HC contract issue into the grass for a short while, with the expectation things get done in the meantime.

I think Ben is just gonna have to go out and win 1 more regardless of who is at HC.

Pretty sure the Tomlin extension equals Ben's time under contract as well.... just not sure if this is a "prove it" deal, a Tomlin getting his first foot out the door, or other situation. Maybe Tomlin doesn't want to draft a QB? I dunno, seems a little fishy to me to extend for just 1 year.

I like it. Eliminates the distraction and gives Tomlin short-term security, but keeps him on his toes.

There linking up both Ben and Tomlin so when Bens contract is up Tomlin can move onto greener pastures with ppl thinking he was a good coach.. The Rooney's baby Tomlin like he's there orphan son

That's great. He can continue to do what he's been doing and not worry about next year having a job. Just Wonderful. There is only one reason I can give weight to on why its a one year extension and that is he hasn't been doing the job the way its supposed to be done and that is all Rooney is willing to go for now. This tells me all I need to know on what they think of Tomlin. Tomlin has done a decent job in his tenure but now things are not getting better and they recognized a change may be needed but will provide the opportunity to make things happen out of respect for his overall time as HC. The clock is ticking.

Maybe he told Art 2 that he is moving on with his life's work in a couple of years? We can hope.

It like the article I was reading about Clint Hurdle the other day. Yes his record is impressive and yes he saw the Buccos return to a relevant team but when you take out the four year streak where they were wild card contenders you are left with some really bone headed desicions. That's Tomlin as well. SB winning coach, no losing season's and some hair pulling forehead smacking wtf just happened moments that are just to numerous to count.

What HC wins without a good QB?

A shot across Tomlin's bow would be no extension. This is more like a saber rattling.

whatever the reasoning is....I like it. It kind of implies, you better win one more while Ben is here (or make an AFC championship run or two). I'm glad the FO just didn't blindly give him a longer extension to keep continuity.
