...Add in that even WITH injuries we're still more talented than most teams. The fact that we couldn't capitalize on that alone is reason not to mention him.

If the Steelers make a playoff run for sure... I liken this team to the Ohio state Championship.... Too much adversity to make sense but too special to ignore.

Tomlin is a great coach who is judged like the President. Gets praise for every move that goes right and opposite for things that go wrong whether it was his decision or not.

I for one prefer Tomlin's play to win mentality always over Cowhers play not to lost any day!!!!

We are blessed to have consistency. And the argument about his players vs. Cowhers is over. Tomlin's players have proved their worth

Oh please, by gosh don't blame the players. That loss lands on the players and the players alone.... Ben included and probably most other than Blake

Pffft! BA can surely draw up some nice plays but as an OC he was terrible. He's a much better HC, and I don't think any of the "OC" BA Bashers (myself included) will tell you different.

As for COY, I think Rivera has it locked up. Tomlin should be in respectful consideration along with a handful of others, but this is Rivera's to lose. I know Tomlin has made some questionable decisions, but what coach hasn't? If that's the criteria for COY then Belichick wins every year.

If it was up to me Pettine would get some consideration as COY. Yeah, that team pretty much sucks, but to have the gumption to bench Manziel as a learning tool when it could cost your job is not something a lot of coaches would do. Having to work under Farmer and whoever their owner is should also immediately qualify the dude. If Miami had any players with backbone other than Pouncey I would also consider Campbell, but they pretty much folded. Kubiak would be another guy I'd consider. He has his team in good position and has to deal with a legend who hit the brick wall hard.

I enjoyed the Arians Football Life episode. I agree with previous posters... Arians is a much better head coach than an offensive coordinator. Head Coach is what he always wanted to be... and now he's one of the best and most consistent in the league. Good for him.

You're one of the posters whos opinion I respect the heck out of so I'll be interested in your response.

When we were going with the short precision attack, our offense was night and day from BA ball but with the aerial attack going vertical, how is our offense now any different than when BA was here? Other than having a much better line protecting Ben and much better receivers I see no difference. I think BA would be enjoying the same success.

Now the part that I was getting fed up with BA was that he was trying to do the offense we have now when it didn't fit our team, trying to fit a square peg into a round hole, and then secondly was his lack of situational football awareness but I have seen that from Haley too, of course this is probably a lot to do with fans being armchair OC's with the benefit of hindsight.

But with the pieces we have in place now, I think BA would be doing very well here, designing plays was not a shortcoming of his.

The rest of your post that I didn't quote in regards to COY, I agree was spot on.

    Hey Blast, appreciate the compliment!

You pretty much answered for me: "trying to fit a square peg into a round hole, and then secondly was his lack of situational football awareness".

I give more weight to the situational awareness thing because that would cost us first downs or points, much more so than lack of execution due to trying to force-feed something like playing a TE as a FB. As an example, it infuriated me when we were in GTG situations and we would go empty set. 1) You show your hand and allow their pass rushers to peel their ears back; 2) you cram 5 receiving options in a tight window with a QB whose strength wasn't the precision timing game.

BA drew up some brilliant plays but he always seemed to shoot himself in the foot with situational play calling. I think Haley has a better grasp at that; at least I can't recall a time when we would show our hand in a GTG situation (with Ben in there). And I look at our 2-pt conversion success rate and I wonder if BA would enjoy the same. Always seemed his offense was designed for the first 80 yards of the field. I do agree that if we had BA now we would be enjoying some great success on offense because we now have the pieces in place to effectively run his scheme. And Ben is wiser now so he could check out of those BA force-fed silly formations.

I must admit that when BA was our OC I was able to watch every game, either on TV or streaming. I don't have that luxury with Haley so I may be missing some things he does that BA did.

Surprised no one has mentioned that "name not to be spoken" who's had to run a very depleted offense and with pumped up balls this year.

Thanks for the response, good summarization :thumbs up:

Yes, how could I forget those empty sets, oh how I miss those!

I think where Haley has BA beat is he knows how to use his players best. For that reason alone, if Im being fair, Id probably choose Haley over BA if those were my only choices.

Now when it comes to the HC position, it's the other way around for sure, BA has Haley beat.

considering we had the toughest schedule based on last season records, being 8-5 is not bad. and also not having Big Ben for 4 games and Levon Bell for most of the season make 8-5 very good. If I had known that Ben would be out a quarter of the season and Bell out after only 5 games and their schedule, I would have given them 7-9 at best. I think we have a very good chance to go 10-6.

If Tomlin doesn't make the playoffs this year (or win a playoff game) he will have failed to win at least one playoff game in 7 of 9 seasons.

The Superbowl he won was Cowher's players and defensive coordinator plus Woodley.

I'm so tired of watching games and feeling a 10 point lead means nothing when Cowher won 99% of those games.

Cowher is so conservative that he used Slash as QB, ran many trick plays that actually worked, hired Dom Capers to run a 3-4 blitzing defense, and had Tommy Maddox throw over 500 times in a season!

What part of Bettis, Morris and Foster running players the **** over did you hate so much? I enjoyed smashmouth football once upon a time.

To reiterate Cowher won at least one playoff game in 8/15 seasons with O'Donnell, Stewart, Maddox and Roethlisberger.

Tomlin has won a playoff game in 2/8 seasons with Roethlisberger.

And let's be honest that those two Super bowl runs were with a veteran, elite defense and a DC that had been there since 92 (as an assistant).

Ron Rivera hands down, winning with less talent than many other NFL teams.

No, too damn dumb. Without Tomlin, we win the RAVENS game and we're not talking about having to win out. And I hate to say this out loud but will. BECAUSE we have Tomlin. I worry about not beating the rats and stains the last 2 games. If he would get a backbone and half a brain I would keep him. If he don't I would ship him.

    Dumb stuff tomlin did
Think scooby who should have been cut at halftime of his 1st game with us. scooby hits one FG we beat the pats day 1. Even he was doinking them he should have let him try the 50 yarder in the rats game
Vick never fit in and should be gone, why would anyone back up a right hand qb with a skittish lefty. Tylor Murphy would have been a better backup.
    Hanging on to archer forever
Jacoby Jones I would have cut halftime of his 1st game

yes the play that changed the momentum was on Landry Jones. A guy tomlin is responsible for subbing in to throw and has no business in the game throwing when Ben is healthy and available. 10 pt swing, lost by 9.

I root for Tomlin cause I have to. I do not understand the lack of discipline and understanding of fundamental football. The team is in complete disarray way too often to believe that we can win a Championship right now. Love the win but many things need to be corrected.

he will actually get some votes- but honestly, is any one worse at trying to run out the clock with a lead? I mean, if I had time, I'd go back and see how many times he's done stupid things in this situation.

Rivera first then Reid and Tomlin third if they win out, because of the suspensions and injuries they dealt with.
