I would love to have Mike Tolbert. He's a bruiser and he's a character guy. I don't think we will even attempt to get him but I would like to have him and Redman in the red zone. You won't be seeing any ballet moves from Tolbert unlike this other guy we have.

This guy has come up like half a dozen times so far this offseason, and I always ask the same questions, and no one ever responds. Maybe you guys can clear things up for me. I wrote this in an earlier thread:

"I wrote this earlier in the thread:

'Let's be realistic. We have to cut a ton of money just to get under the cap. The chances we'll actually go out and sign a new guy of any kind are pretty slim. We don't even do that when we have money to burn. If we get anyone at all, it needs to be a position of need. What the hell are we going to do with Mike Tolbert? His only real strength is as a short yardage back, and Redman is at least as good as him, if not better. There's absolutely no space for him on the roster, unless you're dropping Mendenhall. You want him to replace Mendenhall? Replace speed with power, when you already have a great power back? I do not see the appeal on any level.'

Would either of you care to address that? I'd love to hear the reasoning behind a 1-2 punch of two identical specialists. Why don't the Saints trade Mark Ingram for Reggie Bush? He and Sproles would be a hell of a 1-2 punch. Or maybe we can cut Shaun Suisham and sign the top punter available."

Seriously. Why? What are we going to do with Tolbert and Redman in the red zone? Neither one of them is a fullback. Two straight ahead, power runners in the game at the same time, one to be used as a diversion every time? Or they take turns bruising guys? You don't want to have any speed on the field EVER?

Ballet moves. Get. Your Head. Out of. Your... and at least make an ATTEMPT to view things like they are in real life. Steeler fans at their worst. Right here.

The guy had almost 500 yards last year on only 121 carries, averaging 4.0 yards a carry, with 8 touchdowns. Very similar numbers to Redman.

But...he also had 54 receptions for over 400 yards. Hardly sounds like a "short yardage back" to me...

Imagine being able to have the two of them wear out a defense in the 2nd half after Mendenhall has ran for over 100 yards?!

My original thought was the same as Snack's... that what we need is a scat back to pair with Redman.

However in our 15-1 season, we just obliterated defensive lines with Bettis and Staley... that being said I don't know that either Tolbert or Redman are as good as even Staley was (during that ONE healthy season).

You are guys are looking short term so when you see Tolbert and Redman as the same type of back you are thinking what is the need. However long term is a different story since Redman is a FA next season and depending on his body of work in the upcoming season he could get some offers. Mendenhall is a huge question mark and so for 2013 and beyond it would look to be Dwyer, Batch and maybe Clay if he doesn't get cut. Getting Tolbert to a 3-4 year deal could give the team some wiggle room. However I am in the camp that there are other FA out there in areas of real need that the Steelers should look at.

Redman has been a solid backup but he's not going to see any kind of significant offer in free agency unless he tears it up this season... which I don't see happening. Love having him, but he doesn't have the speed to be an every down back.

That means nothing except they threw it to him all the time. He's not Marshall Faulk. I'm not saying he's not a good RB, but I am saying he is a big, slow, tough guy. Like Redman, except maybe less mobile. Mendenhall (or if he leaves after this year, some other running back) provides speed and quickness, which is a different asset.

You DO know they can't carry the ball at the same time, right? If Mendenhall has already run for 100 yards, then why do we need two RBs to wear down the defense? Redman can certainly handle that on his own, especially since he didn't see much action early in the game!

Of course two is better than one. What if there's an injury or someone gets tired? I'd like to have Peyton Manning and Drew Brees on the roster too, in case Ben gets hurt or is having a bad game. But given the space (Dwyer and Batch will be here), our money, and our other needs, this sounds like a frivilous use of money and playing time for both us and Tolbert, as well as a neglection of our other needs (speed at the RB position is a need. Not everyone should be a Bettis, who had Zereoue, Parker, etc). If we're going to add a big, huge guy to the backfield, how about one that can block?? Why spend precious dollars on a position that's already locked down? Guys like Mendenhall and Redman, Ingram and Sproles, Bettis and Zereoue -- they complement each other, and each get their own reps. Guys like Redman and Tolbert would just be fighting over the same reps, and all the ones that should be going to someone else will be going to waste.

Sorry, that wasn't all directed at you. Like 4 or 5 people have said THIS is the guy they want in FA. It's the whole mindset. This is the guy to replace that sissy dancing Mendenhall. We don't need no fast guys or guys who try to run past people instead of right through them. It's not the Steeler way!

They might as well be saying "We don't need no book larnin' neither." It's so stupid I'm at a loss for words. Well, almost...

I'm afraid if it's over $5.00 per hour, then we can't afford him :D But I agree with you, Mac, I sure would love to sign this dude.

    Mike Tolbert

Free agent Mike Tolbert is expected to sign with Pittsburgh or Carolina, according to Union-Tribune San Diego's Kevin Acee.
Tolbert is expected to meet with an undisclosed team Saturday after negotiations with the Chargers hit a standstill. Tolbert's camp apparently wants more money than San Diego is willing to offer, and the two sides remain far apart on agreeing in value. Mar 16 - 10:31 PM

I like Tolbert a lot, but I don't see us being the team that gives him the payday that he is looking for. If we do sign him, it's bye bye Mendy and probably no re-signing of MeMo either - both of which are OK with me. I know some say that Tolbert is just like Redman. I disagree. Tolbert is a really good 3rd down back because he is a really solid pass protector (something that we need with our O-line), and has very good hands. IMO he offers better versatility than Redman. I would see Redman being the 1st down guy in most cases with Tolbert coming in for 2nd and long or 3rd down.

    Mike Tolbert

It is being reported that Mike Tolbert may land with the Steelers or Panthers. Hopefully its the Steelers.

    http://www.steelersdepot.com/2012/03/re ... -panthers/

I think Tolbert is a good fit for the Steelers, plus he wants to win. I understand that he may have dropped his price a little after not getting a hard look at the beginning of free agency. Tolbert is 26 years old at 5'9/243 lbs. More of a Bettis type, would be a great fit for the Steelers. I hope they get him in for a visit and sign him. He and Redman along with Baron Batch, Dwyer, and Clay would be a formidable group. I like it. Hopefully Tomlin does something different for a change and gets this guy.

As far as Mendenhall is concerned, I don't think he will ever be as good as he was with this ACL injury. He will be on the pup when training camp starts which means he will probably miss at least the first six games. By then, the Steelers can just let him go with the addition of Tolbert. Time to move on. Tolbert and Redman along with Batch as the third down back will be a tough group by the time Mendenhall heals. Maybe the Steelers can trade Mendenhall for a third or fourth round pick. I just hope they don't let Tolbert get away and bring back Mendenhall. After all, look what Sporles did for New Orleans last year after coming from the Chargers. If Tolbert is half that good, it would be worth it. At least we know he will put his shoulders down and run into somebody, which Mendenhall won't!

They should do the right thing and get rid of Big Snack all together and sign Wallace and bring in Tolbert. Draft Big Snacks replacement in the second round. Get an O-lineman in the first, and a ILB in the third, a safety in the fourth.

    Resign Wallace
    Get Tolbert in FA
    O-lineman in the first
    NT-in the second
    ILB- in the third
Safty-in the fourth plus they have Rolle aready and resign Mundy

They will be looking pretty good for this season!

    Re: Mike Tolbert

I made a post on Tolbert before I saw this post. I will reinerate that I like this guy. I would hope that the Steelers would bring him in and sign him. Don't let him get away. In my opinion, he is better then Mendenhall especially since Mendy's ACL injury. The fact is that they can just let Mendy go after his stint on the PUP or trade him for picks. Redman, Tolbert, Batch, Dwyer, and Clay would make a formiable group. I know they would get the job done especially with Haley as the new OC. The two big things the Steelers should do this off season is bring in Tolbert, and draft a starter at O-line in the draft. Also, resign Wallace.

They need to just get rid of Big Snack all together to free up more money to resign Wallace and draaft Big snacks replacement in the second round of the draft. Their is quality in the second round of the draft at NT! They need to stop messing around with the old guard and get on with the future. Snack is coming off of an ACL and he already lost his workout claus in his contract because they know he will not be in shape, so why mess with him. Just free up that money.

    Between the draft, they need:

    A Strating o-lineman
    A NT
    An ILB
    A Saftey
    Resign Wallace
Bring in Tolbert from free agency
Get rid of Mendenhall, Big Snack, and Mewelde Moore, and Byron Leftwich. All of these guys are either hurt, injury prone, old, or done! Mendenhall might be the only guy who could make another teams roster and that depends on how he recovers from his ACL.

lets see, where have you been? Yes ballet moves. He was talking abot Mendenhall and all his dancing with the stars moves. He always dances to a tune. He was dancing to a tune when he got hurt. His time is p if the Steelers are smart, and yes, Tolbert can replace him. Tolbert is 26 years old at 5'9/243, can run, block, and catch. He is a complete back. He did work at san Diego in their type of offense, just like Sproles did. He can catch the ball out of the backfield and can block, and he doesn't dance with the stars, he runs and gets it done. Yes he would be a good fit for the Steelers. I hope you at least realize that there is a possibility that Mendenhall will never be as good as he was because of his ACL. They should trade him when he gets well for some picks. Redman, Tolbert, Batch, Dwyer, Clay and Spann will be a formiable bunch when the season starts.

Batch can be the change of pace back, and Redman and Tolbert can be your runners. I like them as one two. Doesn't matter who your bring in, your gonna get punished! Both of them will be putting their shoulders down and punishing some people. Stop talking about they are both the same type of back, however, they can both run, block and catch!!!

I have to agree with those that want Tolbert. Our O-line isn't going to be making big holes for a speed back to run through anytime soon. Might as well have a bunch of hammerheads in there that can move the pile forward. Tolbert is a very good receiving back as well, so hopefully in a new offensive system the steelers could scrap the wr screen and start using a lot more rb screens.

Much bigger needs for this team, no reason to waste money on this guy. Already have Redman, Dwyer and Batch.
