This made me think of one of the stories on the "Pittsburgh Steelers: Complete History" DVD that I bought 8 or 9 years ago. There's a story of one of the Steelers coaches in the late 1930s or early 1940s (I think) who didn't even bother attending most of the games, and in fact showed up to watch a football game one time and didn't even realize it was his own team he was watching. I can't remember his name and I can't find anything about him online, but I remember how weird this seemed when I was watching that DVD. I'll have to watch it again to find out what his name was.

I believe it was the legendary Johnny "Blood" McNally you're referring to. He turned up to another game, thinking the then-Pirates weren't playing, but then saw on the scoreboard that they were.

Or something like that. It was a great "those were the days" type of story, though. McNally had hundreds of them.

Good call. McNally was larger than life. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_McNally

Yeah, that's it. It's been awhile since I watched the DVD, so I had the details a little off, but that's the story I was referring to.
