The same way she came into it: by falling asleep in my arms.

She was only 10 years old. Her cancer spread like wild fire and we had to end her suffering.

Rest in peace, Jessie. You were a great dog, a loyal friend, and beloved family member. Life will be far emptier without you. You deserved a longer life and a better end. I hope you finally catch those rabbits in another life.

Now if everyone will excuse me, I'm going to have a few stiff drinks...

Aww...so sorry to hear that, Ray. I had to put down our 15 year old Golden Retriever and scatter his ashes a few years ago. You have my condolences. The rabbits don't stand a chance.

    Thanks, TTF.

We knew the day would come. It just came too soon. I only take comfort in knowing that it was without a doubt... time. I'll miss her. I miss her already.

On a side note, turns out I had barely any Buffalo Trace left. So, on to trying the Tuaca. (I'm saving the good rum for November)

Dude that's so lame Ray. I've had to put one down also. A couple of years ago I had to put down my best friend which was wiener dog named Lucy and it's a horrible feeling. I do have to say though that I'm somewhat relieved because when I initially was reading this I was thinking you were talking about a kid. Still I know exactly what it feels like to lose a dog and they are totally a member of the family. We still have Leia and Desi and I love them but there was just something about Lucy and how she fit my personality that I still miss her all the time.

Sorry to hear this, Ray. My wife and I found out on our wedding day that our dog had cancer. Three weeks later she had to be put down on my Mother in law's birthday. I still miss her and this was 4 years ago. It was a tough decision, but you know it is time. She is now free from her pain.

Sorry about that. That wasn't my intention at all. I have mentioned in other threads that my dog has been very ill. I just ass-u-me-d it was common knowledge.

Sorry to hear it. My Golden wasn't even quite 10 when we had to put him down because of cancer. Still miss him tremendously. He was part of the family.

Similarly back in 1999 we found out 2 months before we were to be married that our dog had lymphoma and the vet gave him a max of 8 weeks to live since it was so advanced. Horrible timing. Faced with a quick decision we decided to go for the chemo and treat him after we were assured that chemo on pets isn't as bad as it is on people. 24 months (very good for a dog on chemo) and nearly 7 grand later he finally succumbed to the disease...exactly 6 weeks before my son was born. Looking back it was a good thing since this dog didn't like kids and we were really nervous about how he'd act around a baby. Makes you think about how God will always make things work out. We transitioned from one phase of our lives to another nearly seamlessly. We cherished those 2 years that were full of highs and lows and when it was time to move on, God took him away.

    Damn, I miss that mutt.

Sorry to hear about that Ray.
We're dog people too and it sucks when you know the inevitable is coming. Our dog now is going on 13 and is starting to become a shell of herself. Hang tough and hold those memories dear.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. She was a big part of my life and I'm going to miss her terribly. I already do.

But I suppose if we didn't grieve or dogs like this, then they wouldn't have meant as much to us while we were with them. It's a testament to our bond with them.

I've lost more than I want to admit after doing rescue all these years, and it never gets easier. Sorry to hear of your loss.

Sorry for your loss Ray, they are part of the family, a lot of people don't understand that. It's always brutal to go through. My condolences.
