Why is throwing to the middle of the field non existent this year?

I don't think we are going to be able to go deep until we start making them cover between the hash marks.

Ideally our run game could open up some passing lanes, but Lev Bell is fading fast.

Where are the slants and dig routes? Where are the TE's?

Middle of the field is typically where there are more defenders, ergo more danger. In order to exploit it and mitigate the danger of an interception the quarterback needs to be consistently on the same page with his slot receiver or tight end. In years past that would have been Heath/ Hines/ Rogers. Heath and Hines are long since retired and Rogers has regressed. McDonald is new and JJ is slow.
And really, given the way Ben has thrown the ball this year, do we really want him throwing into the heart of the defense?

It's not that they don't throw over the middle, it's that it is usually late in the game instead of early on when they elect to throw deep. It seems backwards of how this offense is run. They need to wear the defense out with crossing patterns and then strike deep when the defenders are gassed.

This may be crazy, but I'm fine with Jesse James starting over Vance.

Yeah, he doesn't make guys miss tackles... but he catches the ball, and Ben is confident throwing to him.
