Every team holds back maybe a specific concept or formation, etc. for rivalry games (familiarity purposes) to show them something they might not have seen before and get you an edge in these games. The playbook isn't "dumbed down" they just wont use the concept/formation they are saving for the Seahawks or Eagles games. It's probably 1-2% of the playbook they hold back. The 49ers are a team that will be competing for home field advantage in the NFC. They understand that every game matters to them, even the non-conference ones.

I do agree that it is easier to beat good teams early in the season though. Bengals are a prime example from last year. They didn't play their guys in preseason and were a bit rusty. Ended up turning the ball over a bit and losing to Trubisky at home. Works both ways though, since we wont be in mid-season form either.

Should be a competitive game against a quality opponent. Will speak a lot to KFP's progress if he has a good game and we get a win.

Not having a good kickoff returner is a missed opportunity if the 49ers have to use Wright Week 1.

If it’s not figured out by our game then I have to think he misses our game

Until then the heart is still beating

He’s a beast and all but if he’s not practicing by the beginning of next week he will almost definitely be on a low pitch count at a minimum.

I’m going to sound like a hypocrite here because I get so mad when people and pundits don’t give Pickett any credit, because here I am not believing the Purdy hype. I’m sure he’s better than I give him credit for, but I’m also think the moon and stars aligned for him last year in a beginners luck kinda way and his star fades a bit coming back down to earth.

The Niners are a talented group, but Bosa sitting out or possibly not playing is blow to them much like us losing Watt.

We snuck up on an over confident Bills team and we had some splashy turnovers - great for us. Last year, similar moxie from the black and gold, but we don’t win if their kicker doesn’t shank - great for us again, but feels more like a coincidence than a real thing or any kind of trend.

But I agree with you about rattling Purdy and Bosa’s absents really hurt them on the score board. We will rattle him!

I’m thinking it’s more that this squad feels far more legit than anyone believed they could be a few months ago. They’ve seemed to taken a few more leaps than anticipated.

a serious testament to the how Kahn has filled holes and built this team a new and how sharp the coaches SEEMED to have honed them.

That’s selling tickets more than those 49turds.

He’s probably training like a beast and will know the playbook, but I too agree there will be rust that isn’t knocked off. Tomlin - sparring - boxing yadda yadda yadda. I agree with coach on this one.

Meh, it’s either a great hypothesis or far more insight than I’ve ever heard. And it can easily be both.

I have hoped for such a scenario with our team for a long time and rarely seen possible evidence (2005 playoffs maybe).

But I’m not so sure coaches do such things as historical philosophy. What if you have injuries early and replacements can’t execute your deeper playbook gems like solid starters? What if you play teams that squeak a couple by you while you were playing close to the vest and now playing for a wildcard slot behind other teams?

I say most coaches try to win while you can with all guns blazing and keep developing and adapting. Holding aces could really backfire in this billion dollar biz.

He was referencing the Bills falling flat in that opening game, which seems to fit with your claim that they were overconfident. I don't think either of you are right. You aren't giving enough credit to the Steelers' defense, which was fantastic in that game. They were also a tough matchup for the Bills. Remember, that defense's biggest weakness was stopping the run. The Bills didn't really have much of a running game two years ago. Also, the Steelers have been good at defending quarterbacks who run the last few years. They certainly contain Lamar Jackson fairly well.

The Steelers' win over the Bengals in the opener was no fluke. They were better prepared. The Bengals didn't play their starters in the preseason and it showed. The Bengals' issue wasn't the kicker. They lost their long snapper during the game and the replacement wasn't very good. Snappers don't just have to get the ball there. They have to do it quickly and in rhythm. The backup couldn't do that. That said, the Bengals had a little help from an injury, too, when the Steelers lost Watt late in that game.

That was the first game last year when Watt got hurt. How long was he out 7/8 weeks? Can’t have that happen again with him.

Of course not. Watt's health is one of the most important variables on that team. They have much better depth at the position now with Golden and Herbig, but nobody can replace Watt.

They used to be hotter imo.

    crunchy are better

The puffy ones are fun to just put in your mouth and let them dissolve .
Then you try to spit and it's like string cheese

we get to see if Brock Purdy and Kenny Pickett are the real deal! Two second year QBs hoping to solidify their holds on a starting job. Comes down to coaching. I'm giving the coaching edge to the 49ers here. They have a proven system to work with and experience. Steelers will have to play lights out to win this game. Course it's the first game of the season so there are a ton of variables here. I'm going with the 49ers by 5 points

This game comes down to execution, not coaching. The team that makes the fewer mistakes wins this one. No penalties and no turnovers.

The Bills was STILL a PRESEASON game, starters or not; they did not give their best effort.

The 9ers don't need to go deep in order to make splash plays; that's basically the entire concept of their offensive system. The gouge you with running and short passing plays that turn into splash plays and your cooked.
