To make matters worse, here's what Brees said after the game:

"All I remember is just getting clothes-lined in the chin and as I'm on the ground, I'm saying, 'That's got to be a flag.'"

    Really, Drew? REALLY????

And there is talk abotu protecting QBs even more due to the rash of injuires to starting QBs this year.

Put flags on them and be done with it already.

To me, it's not the new rules as much as it is the subjective application of those rules. I would guess that Brooks's hit wouldn't drawn a flag on Ben or Flacco, or on Dalton or Rivers. That's my biggest complaint. IMHO, the flag was thrown primarily because it was Brees. Pure and simple.

Believe it or not, it wouldn't shock me if they put flags on the QB's at least, as sad as that is to say. How much more can they be protected before they reach that point?

Love it! Lambert made a lot of quarterbacks (and others) look like they should be wearing dresses out there.

I see it as the First 5 yards and inside pressure as the only way the Defense has a chance to play...Teams that are playing strong D are Teams with man up CB'S which negate the holding rules and the hitting rules by taking full advantage of the first 5 yards...

The Teams with 4-3 fronts that stunt and get multiple guys at the QB help negate BS calls on hits on the QB.....The refs are trying to protect the QB'S so much that any hit that even looks hard is a penalty if the ref has a good view...To negate that the inside guys are not as easy to see IMO so as a D thats where the pressure needs to come from...

Am I the only one that doesn't understand where all this outrage is coming from?

Brooks basically clotheslined him. Not a clean shot to the neck, but his arm did get into the neck during the hit. And it was all very close to the head. When I think of football, I think that should be legal because he didn't hit his head. But... isn't this just one more instance of what's been happening for awhile now - overprotection of QBs, cracking down on and punishing good football, etc. - and not even a particularly egregious instance? Brooks' hit was very close to the line, even in the old days.

That hit is WAY worse than any one of the hits that got Ryan Clark flagged and fined, and James Harrison flagged, fined, and suspended. Some of the flags those guys drew were on plays that could literally have come out of a textbook titled, "How to Play Defense." Where was the outrage then? It was all in Pittsburgh, and everyone else just pegged us as dirty. Yes, the rules need to be changed, and so does the system for fining, but everyone freaking out over THIS needs to get their head out of their butt. If they really cared, they'd have cared when it systematically happened to another team, and they'd care when calls easier to make and still worse than this one are made.

    didn't Brooks say
it's not his fault Brees is only 5' tall?

    it doesn't apply to Ben
just like if Ben was running his mouth to the ref like Miss Brady was on MNF
we might be playing without Ben this week.

No, you're not the only one. I felt, within context, that the Brees hit was called properly. That's not saying that I agree with the "new" rules on protecting QBs, but it does meet the criteria - he almost had his head taken off from a blind-side tackler.

As for Ben, we already know the reason. He plays tough, so they treat him tough. If he were a little crybaby like Brady then he'd get more attention, too.
