I know it's early but I'm prepared to start pimping my guy for our first round pick. If/when Harrison is cut, I think OLB is our biggest need. Teams will start to key on Woodley even more (and he's already coming off a down season). Our team generated very little pass rush this season, and we need to get back to scaring QB's or Lebeau's scheme is pretty useless. Which is why I like...

Ezekiel "Ziggy" Ansah - OLB - BYU
    6'6" 270 lbs.

Ansah is from Ghana and actually came to the U.S. with dreams of playing in the NBA. He walked on at BYU because the coaches liked his work ethic and athletic ability, even though he'd never seen or played the game of football in his life. He saw limited snaps as a junior, as a pass rush specialist, and the same early on as a senior but eventually took over a starting role. His run defense and pass coverage has improved a remarkable amount in just his senior season.

If you ready about Ansah, he's everything you want in a football player from the neck up. He's incredibly hard-working with a motor that doesn't quit. Reading about his improvement, he's a very coachable player, and a quick learner. I think it helps that he already has the size to play 3-4 OLB too... A lot of guys we draft that are DE's come in needing to put on a lot of weight, which can take some getting used to playing at a heavier weight.

    Strengths:
    • Great burst off the LOS
    • Great strength in his bull rush
    • Played multiple positions at BYU (experience at LB)
    • Excellent motor - never quits on a play
    • Runs through guys when making a hit, long arms, wraps up
    • Sheds blocks at will

    Weaknesses:
    • Raw
    • Plays too upright, needs to learn to get pads low
    • Technique is lacking on some plays - will look unstoppable one play, bonehead the next
    • Hand and footwork is lacking
    • Gets beat by misdirection/draws that are run at him occasionally

NFL Comparisons: Jason Pierre-Paul, Jason Taylor

I think Barkevious Mingo could fall to us, but I'm not sure I want him to.

I agree as my Mock reflects the same pick in the 1st round.

Ansah is a beast and is so versatile that he lined up at NT for BYU on certain packages.

I'll let you pimp him for me SBD. You do it so well!

I actually saw your mock right after I posted this. Glad we agree. I think right now 17 might seem like a reach for him, but after the combine I'm afraid he might be this years Dontari Poe (as far as draft stock).

I agree that he could rise up the boards after the combine. He was a track star and ran the 200 meters in 21.9 seconds... Now that"s fast for 6'5 270lbs

That's just ridiculous! I'd be fine taking him, as it appears he can create some havoc in the backfield and should add some more dynamo to our defense, which it clearly needs. Mingo would do the same, putting up monster pressure, but he'd basically only play on obvious passing downs. Unlike most years there are a lot of prospects that I like for our first pick.

DE Anash will be long gone by the time we pick. I've already seen him as the 10th best overall prospect and 2nd best DE listed and the senior bowl and combine has yet to occur. I also don't see him playing OLB in the pros. A 4-3 team is gonna jump all over him & Jordan.

Before that costly victory verses the stains we had a legit shot at Teo. Now we'd have to move up and I don't see us doing that. with Ray retiring I can see the ratbirds leapfrogging us for Teo so I truly feel the BPA/safety will be our #17 pick.

I'm not gonna dispute his 200 time but offer this. Usain Bolt has the world record @ 19:19. I've seen his 40 time listed as 4.80 which is slow for a track star.

He would be a good raw talent - would prefer to have Harrison show him how to become a Pro.

Funny enough, he is my guy as well. I have seen plenty of mocks have us taking Mingo, but I think he doesn't really do anything well but speed rush. We have that in a guy we can't even get off the bench to get a snap in Robinson.

What will be really interesting for me to watch is how Carter, Worilds, and Robinson develop over the next year. If you add Ansah into the mix, our OLB core could be very good.

He might not of run it at 270 (I'm not sure) but he did run it that fast. I wonder what weight he was while running on the track team?

long legs make for better 200 and 400 times than 40's. long strides at sustained top speed over a greater distance.

A really good read on him. And it says he has vertical of 39 inches and can touch the rim with his ELBOW!!

Scott Wrights draft analysis already has him as the 2nd top senior DE. With his size and speed being put on display come the combine I seriously doubt we have a snowballs chance to get him.

If by some chance we do draft him, where does he play in our complex hybrid system?

It would not surprise me if he was this year's Dontari Poe.

I agree, his combine numbers will be very good. The big difference between Poe and Ansah is that Ansah is actually productive on the field..

I envision Ansah as a situational pass-rush specialist for the 1st year or two.. If we stay in a 3-4 he fits best at Woodley's LOLB position (I think he could play JH's spot too). If we play some 4-3, he's a premier RDE. I should add that our accumulated talent on the defensive side looks more compatible to the 4-3 IMO. I just think he's too talented and displays to good of a work-ethic to pass up.

my only concern is if he can pick up our system. he has only played football since 2010. raw as can be. i'm really beginnig to think we may take a guy like okafor if they go that position first. maybe look for an inside guy like bostic after that.

If we're going to take the 5th or 6th best OLB prospect as our 1st round pick it's a mistake IMO. I'd rather "reach" for Elam at #17 and get the best Safety prospect in the draft.

i'm just looking at their all around ability to be made into a 3-4 OLB. not just their pass rush abilities. will they be able to make that move?

it requires alot of different abilities then they are used to doing in college. pass coverage alone takes awhile. they have to have some resemblence of ability to do that. our OLB'ers go in coverage quite a bit.

i see some of that in okafor. just the way he moves.

this is where the toughness of the evaluation comes in for these converted college DE types. i hope our scouts are up to the challenge.

Welp, looks like I'm going to have to find someone else. Ziggy Ansah blew up the senior bowl... He has the athleticism to shine at the combine as well. My guess is he goes to the Jets before we even get a sniff at him.

Daniel Jeremiah@MoveTheSticksZiggy Ansah has a ton of ability but he doesn't have a gameplan as pass rusher. Rushes down the #'s every snap. #SeniorBowl

He's raw and incredibly new to the game. I'm not saying he doesn't need work but he could be great.
