I think by creating one more thread about the Safety position and one will magically appear on the team! Hahaha

Eric Reid of LSU fs 6'2 208lbs. Honey Badger is a cb not a safety and he's small 5'9 175lbs.

Eric Reid is almost certainly a top 10 pick. No way we get him (unless we tank this year which I do not think will be the case)

Right now I would be trading up whatever is needed to get David Amerson... 6'3" 200lbs....guy can can start at corner, and switch to S later in career....has 14 INT's in his last 15 games.

Did not look good against Tenn....top 10 picks as of today....but with some luck and a few more "not good" games he falls into the late teens...and I trade up ala Troy trade.

I still have my eye on Robert Lester of Alabama. 6'2 210. 10 INTs in 2 years. He is potentially the best defensive player on the best defense in the NCAA. PLAYMAKER.

    Keep an eye on him.

I love the player Hack, but you are definitely talking about moving into the Top 10, if not Top 5 to get him.

I am not sure...top 10 maybe...Corners don't always go that high....and Amerson is not the track star that gets the attention.....You will here the same things about him that you hear about any DB over 6 foot.....He doesn't get low in his backpedal....his hips are stiff etc.....which might cause him to drop...

But honestly...even if they did .....If you think this guy can continue to get INT's at the next level.....then you almost have to do it...as its the biggest thing missing from the Steelers defense...they don't get turn overs....and its hurting them.

    16 INT's in last 17 games.

Amerson is the answer for what ails the Steelers most....WE NEED TURNOVERS!

Re: They Must Get The Best Safety Out Of The Draft Next Year

This is what I think as well.

He won't last past the top 10 in the second round even if he drops.

I predict him even with the holes in his game to be a top 25 pick.....

He has been inconsistent this season.....but that doesn't bother me.

He will go to the combine...and probably run a 4.5.....he will do the drills and you will read how "his hips are stiff" and how he is "high in his backpedal"..there will be nonstop talk of SAFETY being his spot in the NFL.

Guy is 6'3" he won't run like a 5'10" guy.... but Amerson does move like a smaller corner.....and he baits QB's better than anyone I have ever seen....its like he is invisible out there.....QB's throw at him...and he just goes up and gets the ball like it was being thrown to him all along.

He plays the run well....he is physical....and most importantly he is the very definition of BALL HAWK

He is better than Sean Smith who I have wanted to the Steelers to trade for (as well as draft).....Dolphin fans hated him until recently...as he is finally starting to shine....had two INT's last week alone.....and was playing so well the Dolphins had no problems shipping off Vontae Davis and making Smith their #1.

I would trade every pick in the draft....I would not have a problem with trading next years #1.......To walk out with Teo and Amerson....would be the best thing that could happen...then just go UDFA the rest of the way.

what do you think about kawann short purdue or akeem spence illinois at 3 4 de ? since i want somebody that can put pressure from the front 3 , we are too soft up front with hood and kiesel is on decline , i would like to find a guy similar to buffalo bills kile williams

As players...there is not much to not like.

As future Steelers....I am not interested....only because of Hood and Heyward...both 1st round picks

    Hampton, Heyward and Hood....1's
    Ta'amu, Wood ....4's
    Keisel ....7
    McClendon...UDFA

I feel a new DE probably needed soon enough...but we have used so many picks on DL right now...I want to give them every chance to prove they belong ....I would not mind a late round guy....but nothing early.....Just think....Could have had Laurinaitis like we all thought....took Hood instead.

well hack i say let's not gloss over this safety position for him. we need 2 soon. could he and golden do it as former cb's in this pass happy league. the change could be coming to this position to these types of guys. alot depends on his short area quickness too. i've read he's a 4.6 guy now and after some 40 practice he could run a 4.5 at the combine, but true NFL corners need that short area quickness. i'm not saying he wouldn't be a good pick but safety may not be a bad spot in years to come for these type guys. it's alot different in the nfl then it is against college talent.
