Archer is not Sproles. Setting aside the fact that Sproles is far more stout, Archer did most of his damage in college running the ball (much of it between the tackles). I watched every bit of college tape on him that I could find when we drafted him, and he looked mediocre as a receiver. He showed great straight line speed, but very little elusiveness. I hope he gets it together, but I thought he was a stupid pick at the time and still do.

16 pounds is a massive difference. And the smaller the player, the bigger the difference it makes. You add an extra 16 lbs to Antonio Brown, and good luck maintaining his quickness and speed. Subtract 16 lbs from Antonio Brown, and I wouldn't advise running many crossing routes.

btw Sproles is only 190 lbs (probably more by this point in his career), but that weight is packed onto a 5'6 frame. He's much denser and more compact than Archer.

Unlike some asinine FA suggestions from time to time, he's one I wouldn't mind. While DHB is solid on special teams coverage, Jones would do a hell of a lot more with the return game, and would be no worse as a #4 or 5 receiver than DHB currently is...

And lets be honest...if anyone knows what Jones is capable of, it's us...

    Agreed.

I remember Bell saying that his second season was when he worked out the timing of his release routes properly - that he had to be where Ben was looking when Ben looked that way, and not get there too early so the defense could react. I imagine this also plays a part in Archer's game.

His play is predicated on making a guy miss, and then zooming through the open field. What's prevented him doing that in his rookie year is not being able to make the guy miss. We'll see how that develops.

The comparison goes towards their size, Sproles is a little guy who made it in the NFL.

The point is, 5'6" 190 is still small. And he was actually listed as 187 at his combine. If we had drafted him, I don't think anyone would be saying, OMG, what a behemoth.

He had a lousy first year like Archer did, some of us are just saying not to bury the guy after his rookie season.

Yeah and also with our defense looking a little questionable a good returner could really help in field position.
