Well if a certain somebody quit running backwards after the catch it will help.

It’s not the players, it’s the play design. There was rarely any daylight after the catch.

Warren is the only one off the top of my head that I recall ever having a lot of open field in front of him.

I believe that is probably why Glenn Thomas was brought in, to help with the passing concepts.

Calvin Austin should help in this area also.

I think we also played against a lot of zone defenses last season which tested KP and his ability to complete 4-6 throws of less than 10 yards per drive. This typically meant were were running pass plays whereby the receiver was not on the move at the catch, and between 1-2 defenders.
Hopefully an improved running game means teams have to use an extra safety to stop the run and we can hit some pass plays to the outside

Play design is part of it. Pickett can also get better at throwing his receivers into opportunities to run after the catch.

Yes this is his specialty. Catch a short slant, find a crease and outrun everyone else on the field.

The WR's were all terrible at getting any separation. Can't get much YAC when you're covered like a blanket.

Well mostly same Wrs the year before , same OC, with an even worse OL, and the YAC was better the year before. The Qb(I'm not knocking KFP He was a rookie) has a little bit to do with it.

I think having Austin back will make a big difference in YAC. Looking for him to turn the corner. If he can keep from being injured like every other small framed kick returner/ WR we will be fine. He is fast as hell

I'm not sticking up for DJ(hell I was the one complaining (go look it up)about Him getting paid, and said He shouldn't until We see Him with the new Qbs), but He was very productive until Mitch, and KFP became His Qb. So We know KFP will more than likely take a step forward....so most everyone else will also.

Yup. DJ was among the top receivers in YAC with Ben and year in and year out he is in the top in regards to separation so it’s not that either.

I’m sure Kenny can do better with that but I still say it’s play design. Look how open receivers are in the 49ers system and when our guys catch a pass they are immediately swarmed.

I hope our oc/ passing game coordinator can get these receivers routes
That run them open, and KFP can hit them on stride.

    This.

Diontae Johnson is arguably the best WR in terms of separation. Why the hell Canada have him run curls and flats as opposed to slants and posts remains a mystery to me; same goes for Pat Freiermuth. Granted, Freiermuth saw more passes thrown to him towards the end of the season but should have seen more during the beginning. Pickens and Robinson both are capable of such; more so Pickens but I digress.

Another note? Losing CAIII as early as the team did caused a major detriment in terms of acquiring said YAC; Anthony Miller being gone no different. Having both back will help but CAIII's speed and elusiveness will pay dividends even more health permitting.

I was watching a couple of his catch's on YT. The commentator mentioned also as he is running sideline to sideline his vision, or unwillingness to cut forward costs him yards. IDK if he just won't, or he honestly just does not see or try and make a hole, but trying to outrun the opponent outside just is not working.

Alternatively, if DJ doesn't catch any passes, the YAC average will go up. :)

I can see that, but also allowing more time for a play to develop. it's not just one thing, you can scream play action all day, but if you have no running game it is not going to be affective, along with that is if protection is blown immediately route trees are meaningless. Qb extending plays is exciting, but playing backyard football is not something you are not going to have success with moving the ball in a consistent manner. They have signed/drafted and brought in new guys, speed guys healthy, new approach (with the new asst. coordinator). On paper the talent is there, will they succeed? This is the first off season in a while my old bones are actually over hyped. If it was just Canada my hype would drop to nil, lol, but working with what he had and how young they were, and now everything coming together there is a stir.
