highly highly unlikely because Smith does not come from the same offense as McCarthy. That would be a weird match, about as weird as Smith and Rodgers.
I would not be surprised if Rodgers joins the coaching staff, spends a year as offensive QC or QB coach and then moves to OC.

Pure speculation on my part but this is my opinion on how this hire happened.

1) Most the other young candidates offered up virtual 1st interviews
2) McCarthy came in person and said "I'm a Pittsburgh Guy"

Done. NFL team owner are arrogant, cocky, rich and they don't want to be put on a back burner and offered up some lame a$$ Zoom or Teams interview. Those young coordinators were looking at multi-million dollar pay increases and they couldn't put the effort to squeeze in a 1 day trip to Pittsburgh?

I also think with 10 vacancies this year..... it might have been prudent to bring in the veteran coach and wait until a future market to nab your next long term franchise guy.

Most those other bad teams burn through those young guys and just stay bad teams.

I do agree that the OC and DC positions are critical..... so maybe one of those will eventually evolve into McCarthy's replacement.
