I am going to be cautiously optimistic. I think that much of our future success or failure is going to come from the coordinator and position coaching hires that come with McCarthy. As for McCarthy himself:

    The good.

He did take a Packers team in the dumpster and turn it into a super bowl team. Contrast this with Tomlin who won a SB with a team that was doing well and was largely a product of his predecessor. He has also had more success in playoff season wins than Tomlin.

He dropped Brett Favre soon after getting there to swap to Aaron Rodgers. At the time, this was a big deal. Brett Favre was a made man and was the face of the Packers. But McCarthy did what was surely a difficult choice and moved him on. I like that he can make a hard choice like this.

He has come up on the offensive side of the ball and that is something that a great many people on these boards have been clamoring for. Get an offensive mind in the HC spot. Our offense needs someone that can grow it, as well as someone that can develop a QB. McCarthy has developed Aaron Rodgers and Dak Prescott. While he did not draft Dak and was not there in the first few years, once McCarthy ran the cowboys Dak's yards per season took a big uptick when he was not injured. McCarthy has put a good offense on the field with the Packers and with the Cowboys.

    The bad.

Similar success to Tomlin. 1 SB win, lots of making the playoffs but not getting all the way. I sort of see him as the offensive version of Mike Tomlin. Offense is great, the defense not so much whereas Tomlin was the opposite.

Despite multiple seasons where Dallas was loaded for bear, he failed to get anywhere beyond the regular season. My question here though is: Is this due to McCarthy, or is it due to the most micro managing owner in the NFL? Can't say for sure, but I can't imagine it is easy to work for Jerry Jones.

I was hoping for someone fresh, younger, filled with energy and hunger. I don't think we are getting that with McCarthy. I am hopeful that we are going to improve, but am fearful that we are getting the offensive version of Mike Tomlin.

The plan is for McCarthy to coach a year or 2 then bring Tomlin back.

Good analysis Robert. I would tend to put blame on the performance in Dallas on Jerry Jones shoulders.

Not surprised. We're gonna get more of the same. McCarthy is the offensive version of Tomlin. Good in the regular season... terrible in the playoffs. McCarthy would have been a good OC, but not HC.

Steelers are missing the boat again with the Seahawks OC. He was the closest thing to Ben Johnson we could get...and that ship has sailed.

Just quoting to re-emphasize this. He is not a QB whisperer to trust with developing our next long term QB. Is it possible that he can do it? Maybe, but there’s NO history to suggest that he will.

10-8 postseason record with Favre and A Rod through his prime years. Followed 3 straight 12-5 regular seasons in Dallas with a playoff record of 1-3. Other than a single 4-0 playoff run in 2010/11, he’s been mediocre in the postseason.

They never wanted to speak to anyone else except MM. That's why this was done and dusted the moment, he was linked. No reason not to talk to Shula, but this was a fait accompli.

Good luck Fart II, because this will get toxic very fast.

well....the first part might be true - 2 to 5 years, then he will 'retire'

dummy Rooney will finally get rid of the team and then we can figure it all out.......

In my honest and humble opinion, this hire just shows that the Steelers have learned absolutely NOTHING over the past years. They are still stuck in the past big time. The Nfl world around them seems to have evolved signifcantly in the last 10 years+, but these developments completely flew right past them.

Tomlin stepping down was the perfect chance to start new, meaningfully. They had the chance to at least look at one of those new, modern, young and creative coaches/coordinators. Instead, they hire white Mike Tomlin, who is undoubtedly proven, solid and bears low-risk. The downside risk is probably rather low, but so is the ceiling with him. It all just screams like more of the same to me. They are likely to continue driving the road of mediocrity. For the Steelers to finally really change, they need a new philosophy from top to bottom. Tomlin leaving does not suffice, it is the entire thing.

Running it back with Mike, he said's that what he wanted, so that's whe he got, we don't need to rebuild, no-one wanted this except Fart.

    All on you Fart.

Hope you're happy when the fans are booing after a few losses because they will be.
