Sid's daughter and my daughter were best friends at school so I used to talk to him when we were dropping our girls off at each other's house. He told me that if he was out at the plate then they would have had to go into extra innings with 2 pitchers in the outfield because Bobby Cox had emptied his bench to win it all in the ninth.

Dad died when I was a little tyke but I keep the memory (with help of older sisters) of him bouncing me off every bed in the house when Maz hit that HR. We did not own a TV then and I was little young to understand it all but I got caught up with everybody else yelling and screaming. In 71 I was downtown.

 

Unfortunately I had the same thought that night. I was watching with a group of friends, and ironically planning to attend law school the following Fall at Emory University in Atlanta.

The Pirates could not afford to sign Bonilla the year before, and we all knew Van Slyke and Bonds were on their way out. The finances of MLB had truly shifted into the haves and have nots, and the Pirates were easily identifiable as a have not.

The Pirates are effectively nothing more than a minor league team where players come to auditioning for their next team. The entire economic system of MLB is absurd, but the owners will never force a salary cap on the players because the cheap owners know that a salary cap comes with a salary floor, and they refuse to spend up to the floor.

I don’t know why anyone attends a Pirates game unless they are from another city and want to watch the visiting team.

That was back when the WS didn't spill over into Thanksgiving when there were no playoffs or Wild Card games.

 

We who went to Catholic schools sure learned one thing - what Hell was.

 

I have a friend who got kicked out of the Catholic high school here for punching a nun. He was talking in class and she came from his blind side and whacked his knuckles with a ruler. He automatically swung......

I was tallest kid in my school in 8th grade at 6-2 and no one, including myself, would have ever messed with one of the nuns for smacked knuckles or any other corporal punishment. Our Pastor was best friends with the Rooney family and I swear these nuns went to training camp with the team each summer.

Read that Broderick Jones dropped his weight before Training Camp. The article stated that he was 305 at the time. I wonder if he still is?!
