So, now with Nelson gone, the window has opened for Justin Layne. How will he do?

I think, if he was smart and I think he is, he would have allowed Nelson to mentor him into what it takes to be a successful pro. I am looking forward to this season and watching Justin Layne. Pulling for him to make some plays. If Layne could start than Sutton would take over Hilton's duties. And maybe Pierre could see some playing time and they might draft a corner, We'll see.

I have no idea where he will land on the depth chart. With his play last year I would not be surprised if he was listed behind Sutton and Pierre on the depth chart. Have no idea if the other pros mentored him, but ultimately it is the coach's job to develop him...and the reason we have Haden and had Nelson is because the coaching staff failed in that repeatedly.

Ideally one of Layne or Pierre wins the role on the outside and Sutton stays in the slot which is effectively a starting role.

Ive no idea what to expect and would not be at all confident with any predictions in relation to who will play across from Haden. I hope one of Layne / Pierre wins the job though. In a perfect world that is your starting pair on the outside after Haden leaves. I’d happily settle for just one of them turning out to be good though.

    It's ok . We're taking a CB in 1st , or 2nd round, So we don't have 2 worry about it.
I believe LB ,and DB in first 3 rounds.

    Sorry about that.
I just don't have much faith in Layne. I Do hope I'm Wrong.

Hmm..... that is a good question.

Now that Cameron Sutton is the incumbent to take over Steven Nelson's spot, does this essentially make this Justin Layne's audition to then take Cameron Sutton's spot?! Not stating that Sutton will fail everyone but with the likelihood of Joe Haden not being back in 2022, it would make some sense to have Cameron Sutton elevated to that role. Meanwhile, should Layne prove himself, he can become the other outside boundary Corner. Not going to be easy for him though.

Never mind just James Pierre; a player who really grew on me despite his lack of experience. Pittsburgh has conversed with quite a bit of Corners in this year's draft; many of whom will be going as early as the Second Day to late of the Second Day. As stated before, this is likely it for Justin Layne if he cannot put it all together.

Pierre pulled ahead of Layne and was getting the start over him at the end of the season. Doesn’t bode Weill for Layne.

He better start making some strides soon.

Layne best 180. Personally I don't see it. I hope i'm wrong. I haven't been so far. He has shown nothing.

They are not going to draft a DB in the first 3 rounds. Sutton will start opposite Haden and Pierre will man the slot.

I am really disappointed in alot of these players, get out there and play and be productive
in some capacity. if not, time to move on you had your chance. Steelers do not have luxury of redshirting
    players.

Looks like consensus as of today, is that Layne is still basically a special teamer and is behind Pierre as far as getting defensive snaps and that Sutton will start along side Haden, and maybe another guy, like Trevor Williams will step up, well see how it plays out

I like most of what you're selling. Usually agree with you. But I really want to shake you over this. We're NOT NOT NOT devoting the first 3 draft picks to the defense. And one more thing, we're not devoting the first three picks to defense. :drinks:

Not to be nit-picky, but you said CB in first 2 rounds and LB & DB in first 3. All CB's are DB's, but not all DB's are CB's. So you kinda did say all 3. Just sayin'. But your clarification is accepted. Personally, I think the first 3 picks will have at least 2 offensive players. Remember, this is still Ben's team. They are going to prop him up as much as possible. If he succeeds, the head cheerleader also looks good. We're going to focus on the offense. Lock it in.

If Cam Sutton can stay healthy for a full 16, I believe he will be a quality starter opposite Haden. Pierre will most likely fill the Mike Hilton role.

Layne has been awful. The Steelers will draft a DB at some point in this draft. They will also bring in some UDFAs to compete. It would not surprise me at all in Layne gets beat out by a rookie. Frankly he has been that bad.

It's a make or break season for Layne, if he doesn't show something this season, then he's a bust.

Art II said they need to improve the running game, if they draft defense with 2 of the first 3 picks that doesn't help the running game.

Harris and Williams take too much punishment, its the back that has an innate ability to avoid the direct big hits/contact that endure, if you dont agree with me see one the best to play - Barry Sanders, Etienne has quickness and power, rather than just power, he is more elusive

With that attitude they would have dumped Dupree early on, and he was a 1st round pick.

No my friend . I said A CB in 1st , or 2nd round. The other part ...I agree I didnt make clear. So I see the misunderstanding. My bad.
Let me try again. I believe we will in the first 3 rounds , come away with a CB ,and a LB. I believe OT will be the other.
Hell . Its making me confused now. LoL.
I also see what you mean about DBs. I was just hedging my bet.
