See Blount, that's what I mean. Troy been a big part of us winning since he got here but, he has a few injury years and the writers all call him a bust. Dameshek's name should be DUMBbrowskie. I actually know a guy with that last name and he is a great guy. Realzed it after I typed it.
    SORRY PAUL!

Yeah and they said this is a list of most overrated of ALL TIME. Troy's reputation is WELL earned and just because he's had some injuries in these last few years that doesn't take away from the fact that hes been a major part of our success. How many guys can cover the whole field like that?

I hope you're right. I think based on last year our whole roster is pretty much eligible for that award. LOL.

Jack of all trades master of none. Haha. I'd rather have him great at 1 position than good at 5.

Seriously. Essex wasn't even a jack of all trades. That implies you have at least some skill at the positions. Anyone can go out there and suck ass at all 5 positions. Shaun Suisham could do that. I'm hoping Beachum does better. We'll have to wait and see.

they have more faith in him then essex and legursky it seems. for now also, long, farrell, hubbard, golic and whimper at RT. hard work goes a long way. i've never heard of essex working on his craft at night in his apartment like beachum. the kid seems to have the will (and brains) to put the time in , so he's already a plus to have and is showing the initiative for hard work amongst our new linemen. i'd rather see them fail while working at it , then fail by eating bar-b-que.

I definitely like his intangibles more than Trai (although you did do some offseason pimping of Trai's will a year or two back when he lost all that weight), but even the most dedicated guy in the world will still suck if he just isn't good enough. I'm not worried about his work ethic at all. Just his size, strength, athleticism, and ability. You know, the small stuff

He's definitely a guy I'm excited to see this preseason. Can't wait to see what progress he's made.

Picking players as over or underrated during the first 40 years of the steelers existence is a waste of time, because Art Rooney took his poker games more seriously than he did his team; it was only after he aged in the late 60s did he actually consider a head coach who had any organizational skills, and the steelers started to take the draft seriously: Even then they drafted players at every position including QB who were busts, like Mark Malone and Kordell Stewart amongst others. So, there are plenty of players to choose from for this list post 1960s but those prior players were basicly un-coached freelancers playing on Art Rooney's hobby team....

he didn't lose near enough. some stregnth training with that diet would have helped essex. it wasen't like the ziggy transformation. beachum is far better then essex but he is also teamed up with far better players too. i think his size and athletic ability are fine. he's got them long arms which helps him.

unless foster loses some weight he could wind up in the same boat as essex. right now he's a mismatch with the rest of that unit. i hope he does what he says and loses some weight before camp. that would really help his game and the rest of the line. there is alot to like about the guys vying for spots on the line.

That's not true at all. If I remember correctly part of his family played in the first pro league ever. The rooneys have always loved football just didn't have the money to compete. The Rooney have always been at the bottom of the league when it comes to net worth. What changed the history of the Steelers was when they were given 1 million dollars to move conferences giving them the money they needed to compete with other teams.

Call him overrated if you must, but it's a nice luxury to have when your most overrated is a shoe-in for the Hall of Fame and is still feared by many in the league. I'll take our most overrate over the other team's (Chris Collingsworth, David Garrard, Tony Romo, Peyton Hillis, Michael Vick...) any day.

Actually the steelers received a 3 million dollar relocation fee to join the AFC conference, but that wasn't the catalyst that gave them the money they needed to compete at a league level, it was the 3 major TV networks signing a contract to televise games after the merger that gave teams the money they needed to compete, in 69 the Steelers tied with the Bears for the worst record in the NFL at 1-13 the 70s turned their fortunes around with revenue sharing, I still think Art wasn't as involved with the team as he became after the merger. Maybe it was the money that motivated him to become more involved...

Good catch on Mike Wagner. I forgot about him. Most definitely underrated, and he belongs on the list.

I think it depends on someone's definition of "overrated." To me, "overrated" doesn't mean "bust" or "guy who sucked." To me, it means, a player who's regarded higher than he maybe ought to have been. Worley wasn't all that highly regarded.

Interesting thread. My gut is to reply "Woodley" but I can listen to the talk on Troy. He's not the most overrated of all time though.

Troy's career path is starting to be similar to Mel Blount. Blount, for all his Hall of Fame greatness, was really only great in the middle part of his career (1975-1980). Prior to that he was considered to be the weak link in the Steelers secondary, and in the last 3 years of it he was burned regularly.

As far as underrated old 70s Steelers go- I nominate Gerry Mullins. He was one of those short pulling guards Noll loved, and if you watch old game films, you will continually see him put monster blocks on people. He is also, I believe, the only Steelers lineman to score a TD in a postseason game.
