Yes, that's exactly it. The NFL really has no choice but to at least appear like they trying to prevent concussions.

    How is this suddenly news?

Mike Webster? Al Toon? And a plethora of lesser names all debilitated?

No, the reason for the crackdown on the hits is propaganda. If they gave 2 figs, there'd be mandatory sit times for concussions, mandatory use of gear (mouthpieces greatly reduce the chance of concussions), better follow up evaluations (seriously! even boxing shows more concern, and they treat their fighters little better than a commodity) and the league would be better taking care of it's disabled, retired players.

But the league wants to have a tight hold of their purse strings. They don't want to support or take care of yesterday's trash. The active players either cannot or will not fight for those who's career is over. Players refuse to listen to doctors or get second opinions.

    THE HITS AREN'T THE PROBLEM!!!

It's a violent, collision sport. That's why they wear protective gear in the first place. And there's not a football player over the age of 10 who doesn't know the risks. You can't eliminate injuries. You just can't short of taking all contact out of the equation.

But you CAN make sure that once an injury occurs, you do your damnedest to help the guy. The league does little to nothing.

They're worried about lawsuits? They need to look in the mirror.

If they were really concerned, they would insist helmet fit snug!

90% of players helmet do not fit properly. This is the main cause of concussions.

the players of old want a piece of the pie. along with these lawyers, they see dollar signs. concussions are not something new and they have always known they are not a good thing. c'mon man these guys all went to college and are now playing dumb about it. they made the choice to play the game and earn the big money. now they have spent it and want a big part of the NFL money. it may ruin the league further. greed. why is there no workmans comp for the league?

The NFL is only afraid of lawyers taking away their money. They don't give a rats ass about former players. Besides, notice that 2 of those guys were RBs. They don't get the same protection as QBs and WRs ;)

Well what the heck!!!??? Dorsey Levens and Jamal Lewis are former runningbacks.....the new rules about shots to the head doesn't even apply to runningbacks.

At the end of the day it is always about money and protecting an investment so a lot of your points are spot on. It' very well could be for appearance sake. There are other reasons as well. http://articles.philly.com/2009-10-...trust-exemption-head-injuries-simple-question

Most of the old players didn't make big money at all, nor did they have much in the way of medical or retirement benefits. Once they were done playing, they were forgotten about and left to deal with their many medical problems on their own. I think the NFL and NFLPA has an obligation to care for these old players, because many of them can't care for themselves due to their medical conditions, and they don't have the money to pay someone either.

I think it's more the fact that when players had a concussion, they were sent right back out the very next play. It's up to the medical staff to hold a player out if the player has suffered a concussion. You can't expect a player to hold himself out, especially a RB, who could lose his job any given week.

they were making good money for the time they were playing. in 10 years the players will be saying these guys didn't make this kind of money. it was very good for the time. carry workers comp, every other company has to. sure premiums will be high but no different then any other high risk job. put health care in they're contracts.
