Why all the love for will Allen? I like him as a backup but his lack of speed costs us big plays! He has a role on the team, but wish the young guys with speed would get first team reps to get better.

    What are thoughts?

Love from whom? The coaching staff or the fanbase?

    He started against the Giants.

Every time a safety sits out he starts. I thought Shemarko was supposed to be a dude. We know what Allen can do. Average. Let's see Shemarko against ones. Just my thought

Didn't know he started against the Giants. I don't believe he'll be starting come regular season?
Not sure who the OP wanted to see in his place?

Doesn't Shark play SS and Allen FS?

Not seeing alot of love for Allen on the field but off the field he's all heart with charity. At 32 his legs are losing strength and having shorter strides backup @ best.

That is my point. Why not let Shark get those reps. We know what we get with Allen. In the regular season you might go with veteran, but let's see what Shark can do. Instead of waiting until his contract is up and basically playing one year. AKA Keenan Lewis and Cortez Allen

I hope Dangerfield keeps getting better and takes his spot. If its close I would go with youth.

Sometimes bad tape is good tape... Hopefully the youngsters get their shot in the outcome. Will has been dependable, a bandaid when called upon but nothing stellar. We have some serious potential waiting in the stable. Let em loose.

im a staunch supporter of vets and their leadership, but Allen is not a Kiesel or Harrison. End of story.

Shark's been playing both because they like their backups to know both, but he's more of a SS. He'll replace Troy.

Honestly, I think this year Will Allen fades to the back of the pack. Tomlin loves him, but he won't be able to ignore Shamarko. They're making Shark earn it, but he'll get there. I hope before the season starts.

And I hope we can all stop pretending Will Allen is some kind of perfect player that's just a hair too slow. He makes mental mistakes, too. He allowed that TD not because he's slow, but because he took a terrible angle to the runner.

Allen is there because Golden didn't step up last season, and the coaches seemed to be taking advantage of Shamarko's versatility (didn't he line up at CB a few times?). They use Allen in the same way that they used Batch and Leftwich - when your starter goes down, you want the solid yet unspectacular vet to hold the fort. That's how he was used end of last season, and it more or less worked. Certainly worked better than putting Golden in there.

This season, there's much less of a reason to follow that, though - Shamarko has been showing plenty of signs that he can fill that role. I wonder if we see Shamarko start next game? Here's hoping...

And I'm with Wardismvp on this one as well - hope Dangerfield keeps showing something.

TTF How did you get the comments of both Greg the man Lloyd and SteelerGlenn in the same reply? That was clever and saves time. All I got when I hit reply with quote was your response to their comments.

Sometimes it is necessary to quote the entire post.

Mitchell is still nursing that hammy. I saw that by the way gay and allen outran him chasing the RB from the G-men.

I don't know if that's why allen is getting extra time back there, just to have another vet of the defense on the field. this could mean the end to golden. allen being the safety net. it may also be the way they keep an extra corner. shark, mitchell, troy, allen may be the 4. with some others stepping up on ST's golden may not be as needed there, allowing us to keep McCain and Richardson on the 53. 10 DB's - 9 LB'ers - 6 DL.

Did Allen start for Troy? My understanding was the regular season starters are Troy and Mike Mitchell.

yes. against the giants he did. they are the two starters, but if that hammy doesn't get better, I'd much rather see shark and troy than allen and troy starting.

Speakin of Gays I found that 22 played a pretty good game from what I saw. Quick to the ball and seemed to have a feel of where to be in order to make the play on the ball
