Ben was 3rd on depth chart after he was drafted behind Maddox and Batch. Batch got hurt and Brian St Pierre was still on the roster. Ben moved to #2 after preseason, Maddox was injured in the Ravens game... the rest is history.

 

To be fair,at this time,more often that not,the rookie QB was sitting on the bench for much of their rookie year.Carson Palmer with the bengals sit the entire 2003 season despite to be first overall.Outside of Dan Marino,Roethlisberger was the first one to have great success in his rookie season.Ben was the first QB ever to win offensive rookie of the year...Nobody could expect that at that time

 

Dan didn't seem like he was the type of guy to lie to make himself look good.

 

It don't matter much if Cowher wanted Ben or not in the 2004 draft since when Ben become the starter,they were so unstoppable together!

 

In 2004,Eli Manning did not start,same for Rivers...Kurt Warner was considered as washed after the last 2 years with the rams and Brees was considered as a below average QB before 2004 because of his very poor 2004 season.Despite that,they start the season on the bench despite to be drafted in the top 4.Same for Carson Palmer in 2003

I think it's more of a "Steelers are patient to a fault" kind of thing vs. a "Cowher is a bad coach" kind of thing....but if BC had his way, we would have missed one of the best rookie seasons ever by an NFL QB.

And if Ben didn't play in year 1 (which was clearly the plan), what would year 2 have looked like?

Again, I think it's more just what the team's philosophy was back then. But we got very lucky with those two injuries that year.

 

To be honest, owners and coaches are like politicians, lawyers, or the media, when it comes to making statements. You simply can't take any of it as reality.

 

I don't think we'll ever really know the truth about this.

When he book came out, I listened to an interview with LeBeau saying that he was the only one in the room that ranked Ben first in the class over Eli and Rivers (maybe on the Terrible Podcast?). IIRC, his reasoning was that Ben played well in crappy weather. I don't remember him having any information about the idea of Ben vs. the OT.

 

I think if you study some of those draft classes they were poor overall, not just for the Steelers. Not every year is loaded, and some years the dropoff is steep.

Add to this some years the Steelers got caught with a weak class at a position of need.
