Need to look at more than just numbers for an accurate picture. When you are throwing 5 yard passes and behind the line of scrimmage your completion percentage better not be worse than 62%. I also know he was the lowest graded QB when facing pressure.

I know what I watched, he was awful and needs a lot of work.

The YPA factors in dumpoffs so it isn't like those numbers have no relevance.

I am not arguing that he was great or even good. I am arguing that he was not tragically bad for a backup (and one who had never played before and went through a lot of crap on an offense that was bad besides the QB play). People are going over the top trashing the guy and it is absurd. The story of Mason Rudolph is not written yet. He could actually get better. If he doesn't then he is nothing more than a backup but we have not seen enough to know that yet. And even then people acting like he isn't even backup quality are simply wrong if they take the time to look around the league at some of the backup QBs. Heck, we had a starter in our own division last year who was basically as bad as Mason.

Neil O’Donnell has great numbers and people wondered why he wasn’t retained. He was the specialist at throwing a 5 yard out pattern on third and 7. Yes, he completed the pass. And then we had to punt. Statistically it looked good. In reality, it was a turnover. Like you, I know, I watched.

In Ben's 3rd year, he had a 59.7% completion, 18 TDs and 23 INTs, 7.5 YPA, 75.4 QB Rating. No one was looking to have him benched in favor of Batch that year. We were 8-8 that year too under Cowher. Let's face it, Ben was only a game manager his first few years. Mainly because he had and excellent run game supporting him as well as a dominating defense. Mason only had the dominant defense that was only starting to come together.

Ben was largely responsible for leading them to the SB, much more than a game manager. Him and Rudolph aren’t even remotely comparable. It was obvious Ben was something special. Rudolph at the moment looks like he’d be lucky to win the #2 spot.

In Ben’s 3rd season he had a near death experience and an appendectomy to start the season. He never got on track. Rudolph had his own misfortunes but again, doesn’t compare to what Ben went through.

He needs to make a major leap forward or else he not only won't be Ben's successor, but will be out of the league within three years. The numbers weren't bad, but his overall play was underwhelming and there weren't many clutch throws.

I basically agree with you. I don't think we've seen enough of the guy to claim he is not good enough to play back up in the NFL. The one thing that bothers me about him other than the throwing mechanics and overall grasp of the system is that he just looks scared most of the time. I don't mean his facial expressions. He looks jittery in the pocket and doesn't seem to have the ability to slide around to where his protection is strong while scanning the field. I don't think you can teach that.

I actually thought he looked good at that until the Thomas hit. My big issue is he wasn't aggressive enough pushing the ball downfield. And I'm not sold on him by any stretch. I just think people are going over the top to trash him after last year.

I don't even see him as a career back up unless.......

    His throwing motion changes.
He is willing to look downfield long enough to find an open receiver.
He learns how to throw a tight spiral, allowing him to throw a receiver open.

I am with you mac!! Long time no see by the way! I believe Mason can do it but he is running out of time. 2021 is going to be most telling for certain.

Mason, thought the fans were calling for duck to replace him. While Garrett was ripping off his helmet. But, all the while, they were saying .... "duck" ... so you don't get hit upside the head

If Ben does play 2-3 more years and Mason doesn't get a chance to showcase himself, I wouldn't be surprised if the Steelers move on at some point. Inl still think there is talent there but he certainly put out some bad tape last year.

O'Donnell did a lot more than that in 1995, when the team reached the Super Bowl with him at quarterback. He wasn't retained because he was a free agent and got a ridiculous offer to leave.

We should have kept Landry Jones and saved draft picks for both Dobbs and Rudolph...

If Ben goes down no back up is coming up and winning a SB. It has only happened 3 times. The odds are not in our favor.

Wait until Ben is gone to find the next guy.

I don’t know if he will be out of the NFL but I don’t think he will still be here after his rookie contract is up.

My biggest critique of him coming out was he didn’t face any defense in college. There’s a reason why almost no QB’s make it from the Big 12, Aikman being the most successful.

I think that was probably Rudolphs biggest problem last year, at least thats what it look like to me, looked like he had no idea what defenses were throwing at him. He can obviously overcome that but he is going to have a steep learning curve.

    All this said, I have not the foggiest on whom Kevin Colbert could want in 2021 should Mason not be the guy. COVID 19 is merely a part of the equation here. The other is this quote by Kevin about the current opt outs of College Players in an interview with Kevin Clark of TheRinger;

“The one thing, the conferences that chose not to play, and the players that opted out, we understand all that. Obviously, they are doing it for safety and health, first and foremost, and we respect that. However, the players that get the opportunity to play and choose to play, we feel more comfortable in their evaluations,” Colbert said. “Because I just don’t know, sitting out a year, what those players are going to look like having missed the season. There’s just not a real natural source of information saying, ‘Well, when this player sits out, he’ll be this’ because we just don’t know. We respect the fact that they aren’t playing, but we also have to make the best decisions and I think the best decisions we’ll be able to make are the ones where we can see them play in 2020.”

Long story short?! Jamie Newman is off the list in terms of possible successors for Big Ben. Assuming Kyle Trask of Florida does well, scratch him off too. Will Kevin Colbert have to go against the grain here?! Desmond Ridder seems like a good choice but he needs to have a great season for him to warrant such a selection.

If there is no available QB in Round One for Pittsburgh to select, BPA then. Who that will be will be interesting as this team will have A LOT of Free Agents next season.

There was at least 20 years between Terry and Ben... the answer is Colbert isn't going to find "the guy".

No way the Steelers go 1st round qb unless Ben walks out the door.
