Exactly. I dont care where he falls on the list, he makes big bucks, denying that is like denying the sun rises in the east.

NFL Network is still showing on the crawl that we picked up the option on Heyward. They have one for Jordan too. Did we do it after all or did they forget to take it down?

Also, come on guys, Ben does NOT make a lot of money.

Well, sure, next to you or me he's a comparative pauper. I meant more in comparison to his poverty-stricken, food bank-using fellow NFL players.

They forgot to take it down. The Steelers didn't exercise the option yesterday. They did do it today, though. :smiley1:

You can't go by cap number because his cap number is inflated by constant restructurings. Had we not restructured his contract several times, his cap number would be millions of dollars lower. Probably ~ $14m.

Would you believe that Ben is 13th among active NFL QBs in career earnings?

I can't vouch for these numbers, but I have no reason to doubt them either ... http://www.spotrac.com/career-earnings/nfl/active/quarterback/

He makes more then that, this one has him at 102 million.

I don't know what your point is though, the discussion isn't where his salary ranks among QB's, its that the team has a lot of money tied up in him.

Iddon'tknow about that iI read an article that said he was the first qb to hit the 70 million mark on a contract. Could be true but I don't see how.

Does it really matter where Ben ranks now? Wasn't he one of the highest when he signed his $102 M contract?

Not to mention this thread is supposed to be about Heyward.

just a couple of years ago ben became one of if not the only player to earn like the most ever % of his salary or something like that. he was at the time the highest paid qb when he signed his 102 million dollar contract. that was 5 years ago. of course he's not the highest paid now. he's playing out a 7 year deal. he's well paid, he doesn't need more right now.

as for heyward, this is the first players to reach this part of the new CBA if I'm reading it right. we had no choice really of what we could have done different. he jumped his play up a notch last year. pay the man a fair price as the new cornerstone of our D-line and let's move on. no reason to break the bank either.

Do it now though before he has another good year driving his price up more

Right, this is the first year for that provision of the CBA.

$102 was the full value of his 2008 extension. About ~ $24m of that has yet to be earned. But upon further consideration, that spotrac number doesn't seem right. Ben's rookie deal was valued at $22m+ ... so even with an early extension I don't see how his career number can be so low.

My point was that he's not highly paid for a veteran starting QB. Do we have a lot of money tied up in our starting QB? Compared to teams that don't have a decent QB and teams with QBs on rookie contracts ... yes. But not nearly enough where it's an issue.

I'm sure there is a surplus of TE's they could still cut. Besides, after we draft Ebron, we won't need all those extra ones :lolol:

I wouldn't wait with Heyward, he's just going to get better.

we may not have a choice until we get some money. how does this change this years cap right now? or does it?

Right. They don't have the cap room to extend him right now. They'd have to wait until after June 1st if they wanted to do it before this season.

This is what I've been trying to say. Suppose he's even the third highest paid QB in the league. When it comes to the top 3 most highly paid QBs in the league, Ben actually ranks dead last! So there's just no way you could say we spent a lot of money on him. That is a fact.

Possibly when all said and done with the Steelers
#7 will have made over 200 million dollars.
Is that being under paid? Hell that should support generations.
