He's stepping down after the draft per Rappaport

That doesn’t make any sense at all. He’s going to let someone else cook the groceries he bought? I don’t think so. If Colbert is stepping down it will be prior to the draft.

I agree. It should be prior to FA. Nothing against him personally, but I'd like the new fresh set of eyes drafting and signing FAs this off-season. Colbert was great, for the most part.

    Fresh starts are always bittersweet.

Isn't that exactly what the ravens ex Gm did???
Newsome (I believe) drafted, and then stepped down.

He’s doing the right thing. He knows the coaches and their working relationships on building the roster. That’s probably why his contract runs past the draft.

He knows the players, coaches and scouting dept. Work the draft process thru completion then step back and let the next GM come in and get acquainted with Everyone. Makes for a less disruptive transition!!

I believe you are correct. They hired his long time Asst as his replacement. This likely is the Steelers position as well. There is zero benefit in having a GM through the FA and draft periods knowing he is stepping down unless the replacement is working at his right side closely.

Yes very likely his replacement is already in the building and this is a planned transition. I don’t know a huge amount about the inner working of the front office but I have heard Brandon Hunts name mooted as his successor in the past. Omar Khan has also interviewed for several GM positions in the past and would be another candidate.

They need to nail this free agency period and draft, it’s arguably the most important offseason since they drafted Ben

Ooops. Sorry for starting different thread. Didn't see this one.

His contract runs through the draft, so he's fulfilling that and I'm sure that they'll transition appropriately if they haven't started already.

I don't know what league norm is, but it does seem like it would make sense to have FO contracts coincide with the start of the NFL year, which is in March.

The next GM is in house, Brandon Hunt, he is already heavily involved in the draft process. That’s probably why.

I’ve been told for years that Brandon Hunt would be a GM
Steelers brass like him that much
Should he get the job be on of the few minority GM’s in the NFL
Think there are 5-6 of them now...
I think he interviewed with the Eagles a few years ago

but kudos to Colbert I’m not shocked by this I figured he be done when Ben was done... not many people make it multiple decades as a GM for an NFL team

one losing season his whole tenure dang impressive

The plan for years was for him to retire after the draft, whatever year it was. It makes the most sense for continuity since he has been doing the draft prep since the day after the last draft.

If they hire from outside, I would not expect to see a lot of loyalty for any coach.

No doubt a HOF General Manager. Definitely of of the NFL's greatest ever the same. Like Big Ben, will never be another like him.

Thank you Mr. Kevin Colbert.... for everything!! Both the good and the bad. Happy retirement and may the rest of your days be in peace!!! :steelflag::steelflag::steelflag:

There's a few clunkers in there too. I guess you can't hit a home run every time at the plate.

    Agreed.

For every Jarvis Jones and Artie Burns, there is a Troy and a T.J. Watt. Not too many NFL GMs would say that. If anything, quite a bit of NFL Franchises would commit god knows what to have such success...... well... most of them.

Jerry Jones is not one of them. :roflmao:

I have no way of knowing this is true but my gut tells me where they hurt themselves is their reluctance to trade down. Now it’s very possible they try to, takes two to tango but I just get the feeling they just move to the next pick on their board. Two examples that I think meet this theory is Burns and Edmunds. They probably know they were second rd value but picked them anyway.

Having said that, I think Colbert is a damn good GM. Everyone has clunkers.

It is an impressive list for sure. The part I never understood about Colbert drafting was at QB. Outside of Ben in 2004 there are some pretty lame QB draft picks: Rudolph, Dobbs, Landry, Dixon, Omar Jacobs, St Pierre. Granted, these are all mid to late rounders but they are all whiffs as far as I'm concerned.

To be fair though, how many from those rounds have ever gone on to be good QB’s. Most have probably been backups.

If they take one in the first this draft, lets hope they have better luck.
