Medical technology has improved drastically over the past few decades. It wouldn't surprise me if Shazier made a full recovery. Now whether or not he will get his amazing speed back is another question.

Finally some news about this team to at least feel good about. Not that he would come back, but bravo on them for doing that.

I think it helps the team. Rooneys leading the pack on how to treat people (players).

Jaylon Smith got his back after his career threatening knee injury at the Fiesta Bowl. No reason Ryan cannot get his back. I believe he can.

    I hate to be a Debbie Downer.....he ain't coming back....ever.

It's a great story and the fact that he's making the progress that he is is amazing, but the risk of permanent injury is too great.

He’s defied the odds to get where he is. I’m not counting him out.

Classy move by the Steelers though, was hoping they’d stand by him.

It’s great that the Steelers are standing by him during his recovery but they can’t afford to wait around on him to play again. They should have made a stronger push to replace him last year. The hole he left in the defense was massive.

They would have drafted his replacement last year but the 3 guys they were looking at were off the board when they picked. They missed on Leonard, everyone did in the first rd.

I agree with all of this but I do question why they would need to sign him as a player. Why couldn't they sign him as a coach while he continues his rehab? You can still pay him whatever you want and you don't have to disclose the numbers. No roster spot and salary cap implications. Maybe I'm not understanding how it works. He may eventually make it back but not this coming season ,barring a miracle....

I thought it would make more sense as a coach, but it could never be as a positions coach because hes not mobile enough to be one. I dont see how he could be affective at any other coaching position. Theyre not going to hire someone for the sole purpose of reviewing challenges. My guess is that they signed him for the veteran minimum so it doesnt affect salary cap. I personally dont think he will ever be back (nor should he) and that makes over 11 million in free money given away in 2 years.

I dont anticipate them losing a roster spot because he will automatically go on the PUPs list if im not mistaken.

Yes. When I say coach I really mean " coach" . Not sure how the PUP works exactly myself. If there is a limit to how many players can be placed on it? I'm sure they'll figure out the best way. I think.....

I dont think there's any limit to the PUP list. I saw where at least three teams had three players on it at the beginning of last season and of course a player doesnt have to be on the list all season.

Vet minimum and pup list. Won't count as a roster spot.

Still tough seeing him barely able to walk when the guy ran like the wind.

We'd have a Rudy moment if the guy ever stepped back on the field.

I like how Rooney is supporting him despite the odds. Probably the majority of owners would have tossed him aside along time ago.

While I'm rooting for him, I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be concerned seeing him on the field. I'd crinch every time he'd make a tackle. Part of me hopes they settle into a coaching position or something with him. He was a hell of a linebacker.

    Can't kill hope though.

Apparently they tried. I wonder what they offered and what was wanted instead.

Nah, that stuff usually isn't confirmed. Just some insight from beat writers.
