Interesting perspective on Sutton and Beanie.....

It would not let me copy the link, so I copied the whole thing..... But to give credit where it is due, this is a 3 December 2024 article from the Steelerswire by Andrew Vasquez.

Is Mike Tomlin choosing loyalty over CB Beanie Bishop Jr.?

The more things change, the more they stay the same. The Pittsburgh Steelers have dealt with a plethora of positional battles in 2024, with several seemingly being decided on a matter of HC Mike Tomlin’s preference rather than skill set. Tomlin’s decision to bring Russell Wilson into the starting conversation a few games too late was an example of this, as was his decision to ‘move on’ from rookie WR Roman Wilson’s participation earlier in the season when he was healthy. Tomlin is once again staring down another opportunity to make amends and choose dynamic play over loyalty, but the head coach seems keen on the latter.

While rookie slot cornerback Beanie Bishop Jr. has been electric to start the 2024 season, the return of veteran slot cornerback Cam Sutton from suspension complicated the situation. It had appeared that Bishop had locked up the starting slot cornerback role, regardless of Sutton’s return. However, Week 13 saw the rookie see the field for only 9.7% of the defensive snaps, while Sutton took over the slot cornerback duties, playing over 70% of the snaps on defense. Sutton would give up two touchdowns in the contest, while Bishop hasn’t given up a touchdown since Week 6.

Tomlin tried to clarify that it was a matchup issue, but previous roster decisions he’s made may tell a different story.

Will Bishop be given his chance to earn back the starting job he should have never lost? Or is this another circumstance with Tomlin choosing loyalty over talent?

They always are but I did find it interesting that bishop hasn't had a touchdown and throw against him since week six and Sutton had two last week. Might be comparing apples to oranges though and at the end of the day, having too many good players for a position is not a bad problem to have.

That a misleading stat for both the author to make and for anyone to cling to. In order to understand it, it needs further explaining. We could sit here and say Trice hasn't allowed a single TD all year. The statement is true as far as it goes but doesn't give the reason as he has been out with an injury. Brown's 41 yard TD run on Sunday doesn't involve a pass but sure enough the ilb, safeties and corners all sucked big time on that play. Holding up a misleading stat about Bishop because JPJ got beat, or Kazee was once again out of position and gave up a 1st down, or Jackson got honestly beat on a play is just poor leg work on the article.

What really kills me is that the point is valid. Tomlin continually favors vets he knows over guys who are performing that is just true however Bishop was having a tough rookie campaign and being picked on a lot before the 2 interceptions he had. That's considered electric? Isn't there a Minkah basing thread about splash plays or lack thereof and he has had far more electric plays than Beanie Baby Bishop.

That guy doesn't like the Steelers.

I do think at times over his HC career he has favored players but IMO not often. Watching Hard Knocks I see how tough it is to tell a guy he didn't make it. Coaches should make decisions based on merit but I could see the heart getting in the way at times depending on the HC personality.

So much for Bishop's not allowing a completion. They are picking on him again.

He was horrible today. He blew coverages, including the fourth-down conversion on the Browns' late touchdown drive, and he missed tackles. They may have to get Trice or Pierre in the mix more, either in the slot or outside, with Jackson moving inside. Bishop was bad enough to get benched today.

Sutton is a better player than Bishop right now. I have zero doubt of that. It’s great Beanie made some big plays, but he had some big mistakes too. This is fine, of course, because no rookie UDFA is going to be an all pro year 1. But to act like Sutton doesn’t belong out there ahead of Bishop is misleading. They will both get snaps, but Sutton is a better player right now
