At this point, wouldn't an unknown commodity be better than your known commodity? I think he's already reached his ceiling. If anything, I think he got worse last year.

I had very high hopes for Stevenson Sylvester about 5 years ago. Unfortunately those hopes faded to disappointment. They probably kept him because he knoows LeBeau's system but what good is he if he can't find his way off ST's?

With Spence looking to not be available this year...I have no problem with this move to bring in some more depth. Also its a lot cheaper than them having to tender him as an RFA. Plus no guarantee he makes the final cut...but even if he does...I see no harm in this depth move right now.

He's still young. It's only a year deal. Plenty of incentive for him to step up and show what he's got. And if he's not got enough, he'll be cut in camp.

i hope he will be cut in camp because if he is still on the roster our level is very low

If the deal is for the minimum for his years of service it will barely move our cap needle. I'm only concerned about resigning him if there's real money involved.

My biggest concern is the fact that he knows the system he keeps a more talented player who is not up to his his speed in the mental aspect of the game.

Very much like William Gay did to Keenan Lewis for 2 years.

Spence might not be able to go this season, and he certainly won't be able to do anything in the offseason. We have zero depth. Yes, Sylvester has outed himself as non-starter material, but he's a good special teams player and, as a guy who's been here, a good 3rd stringer behind whatever rookie we draft and Foote. And if we don't draft a guy because it just doesn't work out that way, then we'll need him even more.

The fact that we need him is depressing, but that's not his fault, that's just the situation, and not signing him won't help. I have no problem with it.

I have no problem with the signing they didn't pay big money to him, and Spence probably won't play this season.

The list just keeps going on,Spaeth, Gay. I think the Steelers are LAZY in the personnel department.
We have to find better depth players than they are signing. There out there somewhere, Ozzie is finding them.

I would throw Lebeau into that pit too, I bet MT is going to Lebeau asking who he wants. It's less work for the old fart to teach a new guy, DL is done he needs to retire there's nothing left in the tank, he wants old guys back and the blitz are the same 90% of the time. zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Another splash free agent signing for the Steelers. :lolol:

We let Victor Butler get away for what seemed to be a fairly reasonable contract with the Saints and bring back a guy who has proven nothing in the defensive package. We keep these marginal guys around because supposedly they are great special teams guys but our special teams suck. What gives?
