Steve Sabol of NFL Films has passed away.

I know this isn't necessarily Steeler news, but he had an immense impact on the NFL. He'll be missed.

He made NFL Films what it was. You've probably seen him or heard his voice if you've watched a NFL Films video. He received over 40 Emmys throughout his career.
    RIP.

An argument can be made that he made the NFL what it is today.
    RIP.

If I heard it correctly he's the only person to win an emmy in so many different categories, editing, filming, directing, writing etc, which shows his passion and skillset. As also said before, he really helped build the NFL to where it is today, the GREATEST sport ever.

    What a shame.
NFL Films was actually a huge reason why I got into the sport.

    Steve Sabol

I know this might not be exactly all about the Steelers and I won't care if TTF moves it. But I thought everyone would want to know that Steve Sabol has died. Us young bucks basically have the Sabol family to thank for all the great moments their company captured on NFL Films. I'm sad to hear it and he was certainly an ambassador of the game in my opinion.

It was in the 90s when I became a Steelers fan at age 13. But the coolest thing for me was getting to see the old NFL Films from the 70s and letting me see Mean Joe and introducing me to that that REALLY solidified my love for the Steelers. All of us are indebted to the Sabol family for the incomparable legacy the've left us. Noone my age would ever be able to appreciate the history of the Steelers without NFL Films. We wouldn't have the iconic shot of the immaculate reception without NFL Films. The great shot of Jack Lambert standing over the Cleveland player (I think it is) pointing his finger in his face is SO iconic! I can honestly say that the NFL would not be what it is today without the Sabol family. You could argue they are as much an essential part of the NFL as the Steel Curtain, Vince Lombardi, Tom Landry, Johnny Unitas, Joe Namath, and all the rest. They have kept these guys alive and really immortalized them.

I believe that "voice" you are talking about is Jon Facenda. He was the real deep voiced guy that narrated the shows back in the day.

    Steve Sabol has passed away.

Steve Sabol, who was the president and one of the founding members of NFL Films, along with his father Ed passed away toda from brain cancer. He was a visionary who earned over 40 Emmy awards and basically everything we see and hear on an NFL broadcast has his thumbprint on it. RIP

    R.I.P. Mr. Sabol. :flag:
and, Blountforce, so it was Jon`s voice that I keep hearing in my head, that I made my Signature line from?
I thought it was Steve`s, but I wasn`t sure. Either way, if he hadn`t made those films, Jon couldn`t have narrated them.
True loss for the legions of NFL fans, across the country(and world), either way.
    He will be missed. :steelflag:

The Autumn wind is a Raider.

WTF better line is that in the history of sports? Even though it Oakland that is some kick ass stuff that will get a 8 year old boy from the 70's instantly hooked on the NFL for the rest of his life.

RIP Man. You were the best thing that ever happenned to this sport.

Thanks, goofed on that but like someone else said, if not for Sabol, Facenda wouldn't have ever narrated them and I may not have gotten as hook on football as I did. Think about it, a kid from NY who is a Steeler fan. I had to follow the Steelers in the newspaper standings and box scores and short little game summaries. There was no Internet, no Sunday Ticket, if I was lucky I got to see a couple games a year. NFL Films was so cool with all the highlights, Facenda's deep voice and the music they played to it. Loved it, it was awesome.

Yeah I know what you mean about having trouble following them. I live just out of Knoxville and everything here is centered around UT football. It's only been in recent years since I've had the internet and NFL network that I've been able to truly "follow" them like I want to. I used to strictly be at the mercy of ESPN before I had NFL network and it SUCKED having to wait for a snippet of Steelers info while they bragged on the bandwagon Colts or Pats or something. We didn't get high speed internet where I live until 07. And living down here in AFC South territory that's pretty much the only games they would show. I can say that the Steelers are really popular here too though(as in most places) but I'm sure KnoxVegas would agree that until Peyton got traded to Denver all you ever saw around here were Colts games. But I did have ESPN Classic and they would show NFL Films all the time and I LOVED when they would show the old stuff from the 70s. Really if you think about it NFL Films spawned a whole NETWORK! They could never exist without that HUGE stockpile of footage from the Sabol family.

I think it was Steve's dad that started the NFL Films thing, Steve followed in his dad's footsteps and carried on the company. Steve actually introduced his father into the Hall of Fame a few years back. They are already saying that Steve needs to be in the hall now too. I for one agree that the Sabol family was a huge factor in the success of the NFL. Facenda's voice and the filming of the Sabols brought so much to the game. Football follies will always be a favorite of mine.

Ed and Steve Sabol took the NFL to a whole new level. For me it's the only way I got to see how Jim Brown played, how good the Steel Curtain was, how great the Green Bay Packers and Vince L. were. NFL films is the reason how my kids will get to see how great Barry Sanders was and how great Superbowl XL and XLIII were. If it weren't for those guys a lot of great moments would have been lost. RIP STEVE and thank you.
