Scouting the NFL these days is probably so much more challenging than it was 20, 30 or 40 years ago. Back then a team could keep players on a secret radar. That probably doesn’t happen much anymore.

Never met a pro scout but was at a HS football game with one scouting for Penn State. He had binoculars and spent whole game watching one kid on defense. When offense was on field he didn't pay attention. Damn if I can remember his name but I know after Penn State he got picked in the draft. Not sure how he faired. It was early 80's so I was suffering Steeler decline from wonderful 70's.

It's another indication that the Steelers are no longer willing to stick with the old way of doing things. It's one of the reasons I think that indicates even with Mike Tomlin as coach we are looking at improving this team. The people on this board should be happy with the changes but instead are feeling doomed because of Tomlin being the head coach. Silly. New coaches, new philosophy on offense I am kind of looking forward to the coming years should I live that long! Also the last two drafts have been HUGE improvements over previous efforts. I guess some folks just like the doom and gloom

Read an article ages ago where an anonymous gm talked about the Steelers scouting. He said they used to be the best, but have fallen off. If I remember correctly this was back when Seattle had their little run.

many of the replaced scouts retired. they had been here for awhile. the only real young up and comer was the guy that many thought would be the next GM. i forget his name. much of this is just natural turnover.

I wouldn't say more challenging from a pure scouting perspective. I definitely concur from the logistics and planning aspect of it though. So many moving parts now and it isn't just the Colleges anymore. These players have far more freedom than they have ever had in quite some time; making showing up to Pro Day's a hit or miss given how some of these players now have private workouts; either due to injury or personal choice.

Omar Khan evolving the draft philosophy is a reflection of the times.
