    First half thoughts?

T.J. Watt (as I knew he would be), is the real deal.

Jerald Hawkins. Has done well given the fact he has not faced some competition since last season.

Mike Hilton. If he can keep it up.. he will crack the final 53.

Colin Holba... or rather what I did not hear of him. Great job thus far.

Tyler Matakevich. Looked solid in coverage to me. Those agility drills really helped him out.

    L.T. Walton. Good interior presence.

88 sure was not helping him - slow... 33 was a bit slow too...

Watt looks great. Hope he keeps up. My knock on him was explosiveness. He looks like he had it tonight.

I'll be hard on Dobbs when he looks bad but I will praise him when he looks good. He had 2 really nice throws to Cobi. Other than that, lots of mistakes. I like his feet, but bad accuracy, bad diagnosis, looked real awkward on a draw play, like he faked to the wrong side where nobody was. Lots of work to do.

Liked what I saw from JuJu before he left.

Defense looks solid. Gave up a few big runs up the middle. Correctable.

I saw some people mentioning Hilton before the game. Looks solid. I don't know mich about him. Will have to look him up.

As mentioned, I haven't heard Holbas name mentioned, which is good.

Think Hawkins gave up that sack up the middle. Didn't look good there.

I am.not trying yo take away watts first sack but watch it again. Cam EXPLODES on the center. that's the collapsing pocket we need to see. great work on what is not a good online.

Regardless of how Watr got the sack, he got the sack. Progress is important.

So far so good ...nothing glaringly bad anywhere. Backup RBs look like we better pray Bell stays healthy or Conner can add more...Dobbs probably what we could realistically expect.... I think play calling more tailored to his athleticism would be much more beneficial, but it is preseason so....looks like a solid DL and OLB rotation, which can only help....

    Looking at my notes...

    Knile Davis sucks

Mike Hilton wins his gunner matchup every time

Watt has four A grade snaps, and all 4 are impressive for completely different reasons.
    - the "disengage" sack
    - the cross field backside pursuit
    - the clear lane/explosion rush sack
    - the hand tech "almost sack'

Eli Rogers still runs sloppy routes on the outside

Not sure which Dobbs INT is uglier

Dobbs displayed arm strength on that rip downfield to Cobi

Moats doing a good job to keep his job

Hargrave coming off the field for anything but normal breathers... is no longer acceptable.

Cobi Hamilton is creating some trade value.

Interior line has to increase its presence.

Dobbs 1st go with partial starters against partial starters. What I liked was he didn't go put his nose in the corner, he came out and had the last 1st half laugh. However yes... I saw where he locks on. Good strong arm (1st pick he was clipped) did about as well as I figured he would. Didn't rely on his legs and that's a big plus in my book. He learns to read and settles down he'll definitely be interesting moving forward. TJ is gonna be more than fine. Hard to gauge stuff on inexperienced players getting the call tonight as well as all the vanilla involved but 1st half could've been uglier than it was shaping up to be.

My thoughts on the bolded exactly. Dude is the real deal.

One more thing. Javon coming off is quite unusual indeed.

Don't want to turn things into an anti Jarvis Jones thing but Watt's first sack showed the correct move, something Jarvis had trouble with. Watt holds his ground and when the time is right sheds the block, makes the sack. Jarvis was never able to shed that block. Good thing to watch. His second showed great instincts and football knowledge as he sniffed the fake out while a few plays later the veteran Moats falls for it. Great things to see.

I'd also temper the expectations with Knile Davis. The offensive line looked horrible in the first half. I thought Davis was fine with what he could create.

Davis is a tank that needs some space to get going. If he gets to the second level good luck tackling him.

I agree... That's the difference in things. Some guys just hit the hole and take what's given vs.someguys just broaden their horizons a bit and get a little more. Line didn't help much but we already knew who he was coming in
