Didn't see the game, only the ever-so-informative NFL.com highlights, so I was going to ask about the play-calling. I'm presuming that we're keeping the new playbook as guarded as we can over the next few weeks until proper game time...

I was very impressed that Ben utilized the TE as well as how quickly he was releasing the ball. Has someone been working with him on a quicker release? Oh wait BA is gone that would explain it.

Even though we have Charlie Batch as veteran backup after all the dust settles on the Wallace deal we should draft we need a younger veteran backup QB' :yeehaw:

Couldn't watch the game but listened on the radio and its the same as always. Prevent defense still prevents you from winning. I know its only preseason but why in the world do defenses still play that way?
Tunch and Wolf kept saying that the OLine still has problems. There is still lots of work to do.

On a positive note. If history is any determining factor. When the Steelers have a bad preseason record then their regular season record is pretty darn good. Here's hoping for an 0-4 preseason! yuk, yuk, yuk.

I refer to the preseason as the Battle of the Future UPS drivers. That's a step up from Dominos...I think the college experience may help some.

I actually was thinking about that last night as well, mostly due to the fact that the Eagles appear to have 4 guys...meaning someone is getting cut. Considering Trent Edwards has been out of the NFL for a whole year, he looked capable. Foles and Kafka can both play, so unless Vick is toast, one of these 3 guys is getting cut.

Oline needs a lot of work or Ben is going to have a long season and possible injuries. Was not impressed at all.

I was afraid of this as probably many were. There is obviously time and potential for improvement even for this year, but my gut has been telling me all along that although we have some great young talent it is still going to take time and a bit of luck for it to come together on the field as it does on paper.
Here's to hoping we at least see improvements over last year and Ben is able to play all year.

Yeah there is no way Batch should be used for goal line. He just stunk

OL pretty much looked like last year with the big difference that there are at least two guys on the line (DeCastro, Adams) who had their first pro-snaps while the guys they replaced had already hit their ceiling.
So there is a lot of room for improvement there, let's hope it happens before regular season starts :D

I thought Essex stood out as someone who had a terrible game.

a work in progress is what i saw. people have to keep in mind it's the first preseason game. all these backups are getting very little reps. no they are not going to look very polished at this point. first off we are putting in a completely new offense and the starters are getting more reps then they would in most years, which takes reps off of the backups. you guys are cutting guys already off of this one game? really? lol.

beachum had the block that sprung rainey on the TD. on one of the sacks they said he looked so bad on , he had two outside guys to block if nobody saw that. he shouldn't have two outside guys to block on any play. someone else missed an assignment leaving him with that choice. he also had good form taking his man back around the qb, only to have the qb stand there like a statue and not step up into the pocket, again not his fault on that one either. no he wasen't perfect but to say he should never play that position is kind of nieve.

gilbert stunk the place up. DD was getting alot of help. even pouncey missed an assignment on a pass play. foster looked average too. the line needs work and they will get it.

j.johnson had no time and no receivers open and not alot of reps. they had a struggle getting plays in and called in a timely fashion. again because of the reps in camp. to think JJ ought to be in the same form as charlie or leftwich is just crazy at this point in his career.

i saw some good with the bad and thats why we play these games. this will all be worked on this week, but the backups still won't be as polished as most people expect them to be. they just don't get the attention and reps that the starters will, ever. nor should we expect them to.

Maybe wrong choice of words with Brown getting burned. We'll say "beat". But I say if you don't, get your head turned around or hands up like a dB should u got burned especially if both resulted in a touchdown. On the where the receiver was wide open, check the replay. Brown was schooled, beaten or burned right out of the box. A couple of moves by the receiver left Brown searching. But it's only preseason and he'll get better

One thing that I noted watching the eagles was they were fortified much better at the QB position then we were. We have a top 5 QB in Ben but if something happens to him I would not want Lefty in there. He seems to have lost a step or two. Charlie is no more then a good cheerleader at this point and its too early to form an opinion on Johnson at this point. We really need a good veteran signing.

Scary watching how many sacks the Oline gave up even though it was mostly second stringers. If Ben was back there I am thinking had he played longer he would have sustained injury.

We play these guys in the regular season, so I take VERY LITTLE from this game. There's no way either team used their full packages on either side of the ball.

I did not view the game, but it seems like the first team did what it needed to do, got their work in, got the lead and got out. The guys who gave up the lead will be long gone by Sept. 9. I'm ready for the regular season now. The rest of these games benefit the coaches and the marginal players more than they benefit me. I want to see what Tomlin/Haley/LeBeau have in store for us starting Sept. 9!

    what i liked:
    1. ben is looking very comfortable
    2. rainey is going to create alot of mismatches this season
    3. barron batch didn't get very many yds., but considering he's coming of a major injury, he carried the load and doesn't seem to be any worse for the wear.
    4. for someone who gets hurt pretty easily, leftwich took a pretty nasty hit and basically bounced right back up.............
    5. mcclendon is going to be a beast this yr............... it wouldn't surprise me if he kept the starting job when hampton returns.
    6. our defense is going to win a few games for us this season
    7. the receivers are looking pretty good...........
    8. decastro is much farther along than the training camp reports lead us to believe
    9. jerrod johnson will be a pretty good back-up with a little more experience
10 mike adams already is a pretty accomplished run blocker
11 drew butler looked pretty good out there
12 i think we may actually have a battle brewing at the pk position

    what i didn't like:
    1. mike adams needs alot more work in the pass blocking department
    2. curtis brown looked way too much like ricardo colclough........... beaten badly by back-ups and pre-season hopefuls
    3. did ziggy play at all .............. i know i mentioned the first team defense as looking good, but with all those work out videos being shown, one would think that mr. hood would've had his name called a few times.
    4. our starters in the secondary had best stay healthy, because the hopefuls are not ready.
    5. david johnson's injury

Remember , we potentially have three new starters (inc. two rookies) with a new OC. It isn't going to be perfect from the get-go. I have no doubt the performance will improve greatly by the time the real games start (by real games I mean the playoffs).

Batch did lead the team in rushing yards last night....Not his fault they kept having him run head first into a wall

As an OSU fan....I can tell you that was Adams problem in college as well.....speed rushers are his kryptonite....but I truly think he can get pull it together.
