    Now, debate . . .

Personally, I'm not ready to put Big Ben over Bradshaw yet.

Also, I think Bobby Layne may be a bit high on the list. I think he really made a name for himself more in Detroit than in Pittsburgh.

This list really personifies the troubles this team has had in finding good quarterbacks in its eighty-year history.

Here, here Ben over Terry not yet he needs to get us to #7 first and the league has change so much since the Bradshaw era "finese" theres alot protection rules fro todays Quarterbacks even though refees miss alot that happens still not the same rules or speed.

    Bradshaw: 4 - 0 Super Bowl record
    2 time Super Bowl MVP
    1978 NFL MVP
    called own plays throughout career
    1989 HOF inductee

    Roethlisberger: 2 - 1 Super Bowl record

    Why is it even close?

Agree about Layne being more a lion than a Steeler.

I think Layne aside, you take Bradshaw as 1, Ben as 2, O'Donnell as 3 and Stewart as 4 (though you would probably have to specificy criteria - as a traditional QB we all know Stewart's shortcomings, but as slash we all know how effective he could be).

Beyond that I actually think the really interesting debate starts, in terms of who gets the nod out of Brister, Malone, Tomczak etc.

I still wouldn't put Maddox on the list though. That would just be turning it into a list of Pittsburgh QBs you can remember the name of.

I didn't even know we had 10 good QB's in our history!

    And I still don't. :roflmao:

But, I suppose if you tried, you could make a top 10 of anything, such as Top 10 Tampa Bay punters, or Top10 RB's who could beat off defenders.

Actually, I think this pretty much exhausts the list of "Pittsburgh QBs you can remember the name of." I mean, really, the only people missing from this list were a handful of stop-gaps (Jim Miller, Kent Graham, Cliff Stoudt, Todd Blackledge, Steve Bono), career backups forced into duty (Batch, Dixon . . . oh wait, Tomczak and Maddox BOTH made the list), and one epic name (Dick Shiner).

What this amounts to, really, is a two-horse race. To put Ben over Brad is, at this point, laughable. A Hall of Famer who has performed his greatest on the biggest stage versus a currently borderline HOF'er who . . . well . . . sans one drive in XLIII . . . has not performed very well on the biggest stage.

The rest of the list is pretty much interchangable. In fact, the interesting thing about his list is that the entire bottom half of the list's careers are viewed more as a joke than anything else. If you were to ask most Pittsburghers for either a simple thumbs up or thumbs down, I believe Kordell, Bubby, and Malone would all get a decisive thumbs down, Tomczak would get a sideways thumb simply because he never really sucked badly enough and he never really had any expectations, and O'Donnell wouldn't get a thumb at all but an entirely different digit altogether.

btw, I think in that post you have, in fact, named every QB I could off the top of my head. Gilliam, Kruzcek, Hanratty... erm...

Might have to now go and check wikipedia.

No doubt (at least for me) that TB deserves the #1 on that list.

Exactly! And but for one magical drive against the Cards, Ben's Super Bowl performances have been mediocre to below average. Bradshaw was ALWAYS on his game in the BIGGEST GAME!

Ben may eclipse Bradshaw with a couple of more Super Bowl appearances where he plays at an MVP level, but at this point he is number 2 behind TB IMHO.

I'm not sure who these folks are at OVathletics but, Bradshaw should definitely be our #1 and, Montana not only won 4 Lombardi's also but he was MVP in 3 of those wins.

Woodley had a tough life. I think he died a couple years ago in Lousiana or something.

    In the numbers . . .

Terry Bradshaw currently has more passing yards, TD's, and wins than Big Ben. Not sure what you mean by "holds every Steelers passing record" . . . (WILL hold, probably) . . .

Big Ben, O'Donnell, Maddox, Kordell, and Tomczak all had better career passer ratings with the Steelers than Bradshaw . . .

Jay Cutler and Jake Plummer each threw for more yards in a season as Denver Broncos than John Elway ever did . . .

Cutler, Plummer, Orton, and Griese all had better career passer ratings as members of the Denver Broncos than John Elway did . . .

John Brodie has more career passing yards as a 49er than Steve Young . . .

The single-season passing yardage record in the 49ers organization is held by Jeff Garcia . . .

Tony Romo, Roger Staubach, and Danny White all have better career passer ratings than Troy Aikman . . .

Vinnie Testaverde and Drew Bledsoe each have more career passing yards than 23 Hall of Fame quarterbacks including Fouts, Montana, Unitas, Kelly, S Young, Aikman, Bradshaw, Starr, and Staubach . . .

    Numbers schnumbers . . .

I agree. The 4-0 is all I need to know. I love Ben but to say that he's better than a guy that played when qb's could basically get their heads ripped off it's hard to put Ben ahead of him. I do think that Ben does play that old school style of football and still could've thrived even under the Bradshaw rules. Honestly I think he's the ONLY qb in football right now that could've done that actually. The other 2 modern qb's I think could've done that are Favre and Elway.

You can't compare different era though... You could murder receivers and QB's with the old rules back in the day, and Steelers were run first in the 70's.

I love Ben, but Bradshaw never lost a Superbowl, and never looked as bad as Ben in his first one.

Bradshaw had 4 years in by his 1st Super Bowl also though. Plus when we talk about Bradshaw we only think of the Super Bowls. But earlier in his career there was even a time when he was benched in favor of Hanretty. Ben has NEVER been in danger of losing his job. I'm just saying if you look at the WHOLE picture and not just 4 games I think Ben looks really good in comparison. That being said please don't forget I still like Bradshaw better.

Yeah, didn't even read the article. We don't have a top 10. Seriously on offense it will be hard to pick a top 10 in any position
