How could they have lowered his contract if they waited? They couldn't force Woodley to take a pay cut (I've read they did try to get him to though)...

Given where we were a few years ago with OLB depth, circa the Thaddeus Gibson release, this is perhaps the thing I find the most depressing about our current situation. I foresee an interesting camp/preseason with the number of guys we'll need to bring in.

Can't say I'm broken up about this. Yes, I understand the concern about our depth. But Woodley hasn't earned that contract since the day he signed it.

This is actually an artist's impression of his meeting with Tomlin.

Choose your next words carefully, Mike Tomlin. They may be your last as Coach.

You took an extremely high and generous contract. You took money away from other positions we need to upgrade. And you repaid us by being out of shape, lazy on the field, and with lackluster production... when you played at all. Oh, I've chosen my words very carefully.

You would cut your highest paid, most experienced linebacker? You would cut your starter for years with no sure replacement? This is madness!

    Madness?

SOB! This is twice I've bought an active player jersey and they've been cut! First Kirkland, now Woodley!

I couldn't agree more. We have 2 unproven starters and no depth at all. The only way this makes sense to me is if Woodley simply refused to accept any significant pay cut.

Too bad I liked Woodley but he ate his way out of here. He couldn't stay healthy and I think his weight had a lot to do with it. That being said anyone wanna buy my signed Woodley football. HAHA

He would have to be totally delusional to believe that he wasn't due a pay cut and competition for a starting job after the past 2 1/2 seasons.

This is a really good move by the Steelers. This is the message that needed to be sent. The defense was soft and slow the last couple of years and Woodley was the poster child of soft and slow. Put some young, hungry players in there and let them have at it.

I hate the dead money, but it's better than paying full-freight for dead weight. I was hoping that the team and Woodley could have agreed on a pay cut that would have paid him more than his real market value for next season while improving our cap situation without all of that dead money. Oh well.

really when you look at it honestly what has Woodley proved? look at his time here as a whole and its been pretty average at best. sure he had some good games and big plays but that can be said about worilds as well. he just hasn't had the snaps Woodley has. I am fine with this and would be ticked off if we went olb in first again

He didn't get that contract for being average. Injuries derailed him, even if he may have been to blame for some of those injuries.

he played 16 games 2 times in 7 years. he did have double digit sacks three times and 08 and 09 where great years but when you look at his stats, and that's what everyone wants to judge people on, I think they were average. here is a little perspective. last year worilds had in 15 games. 63 tackles, 43 solo, 20 asst, 8 sacks. woodleys best year was 09. he had 62 tackles, 50 solo, 12 asst, and 13.5 sacks in 16 games. not a lot of difference. so if people think worilds is average is Woodley that much better? just asking

How about we wait until the final roster/etc is set and see how things look as theres a LOOONG way to go before we'll know the final depth...as some FAs could be brought in, player re-signed...draft picks/etc. In the end they should be fine...most teams cannot afford to have potential stars/etc as backups...majority of us knew...it would come down to Worilds OR Woodley...they couldnt afford both. They will be fine...I think we see at least 1 draft pick made at the position and maybe 1 decent FA (not including re-signings...or any of the future contract guys that have brought in already).
