Was getting ready to post this. We all saw it coming. Guess JJ better be in the gym bulking up as its on him to break out.

Wow. I didn't see that coming that quickly. I thought we would hold onto him until after the draft.

I still think this is a mistake.

JJ is unproven, and we have only seen Worilds perform well in a handful of games. If JJ and Worilds are our starters that means our depth is non existent, and if they underperform or get hurt we are screwed.

Nice and I think them looking at all these top tier corners spells doom for Ike as well.

We now "officially" have no depth at the position. We better be lining up as many OLBs as we can to come in and compete. The cupboard is bare...

We shall see soon enough I guess...but I too thought that if it was going to happen that they'd wait a little. However...we are talking about the Steelers and they try to be fair to their guys and such...releasing them early/etc so they could find work/etc elsewhere and such.

I always liked Woodley...and will continue to wish him well. But I hated the contract they gave him (obviously none of us were in the on the negotiations so who knows what went on there). And then the damn injury bug has killed him...when he's "on" as a player hes really good. But with the contract and restructures and injuries killing him...this isn't totally unexpected. Though I will be sad to see him go.

Also...does this mean the team is close to extending Worilds?

TTF...what were the numbers again that Woodley would still cost and the savings with the June 1st thing?

Ike better be prepared to play for the most, half of his cap hit or he should be shown the door too.

I know he has been working very hard and was told by some buddies down and Georgia who have seen him working out that he is well on his way to adding some pounds of muscle

Questions- where does this put us in terms of cap space? Des this open the door for a draft including Shazier? It makes sense ......

I think he was on TE books for about 16mil this year. It should split that charge over this year and next so about 8mil saved in his releas; I think.

So where does that money get spent??? This immediately makes OLB a priority in the draft again.

The Steelers will carry his $13.59 Mil cap number through June 1st, then that will be reduced to $5.59 Mil, saving $8 Mil in 2014. This will be the rookie signing pool, summer insurance signings, etc.

The move adds $8.58 Mil in dead money for 2015.

As long as they are in compliance by Tuesday they can be over the cap by the amount right after Tuesday?

Like saying when is the next day they are due to be in compliance? June 1st?

I'm not sure I understand. They have to be in cap compliance by 4:00 PM Tuesday, and have to stay that way from then on.

Sure hope they bring in a FA LB now, if they go into next season with what they have, it will be incredibly stupid. Nobody we draft will help us this season, we all saw how much JJ struggled.

Knowing our luck he's gonna go down this summer train with Shaw and play injury free for someone....smh. Our depth really worries me.

Not sure I understand the rules behind this either. They cut him in March, but designate him as a post June 1 cut? My logic is not computing this.

Yeah meaning we don't get the money until June but it gives him a better chance of catching on with another team. If I'm thinking correctly the league year starts June 1st is that correct TTF?

For accounting purposes, the NFL allows teams to release any player after the league year begins, and designate them a "June 1st" cut. This is done so that a team can push the remainder of a player's bonus money on to next year's books, enabling them to cut ties with a player who has a large salary cap number. If they just released him, all of his guaranteed bonus money would accelerate immediately. This also gives the player a chance to go find another contract in the peak of free agency, vs. being tied to the prior club until June.

They don't see any savings until after June 1st correct, but the league year starts tomorrow at 4:00 PM. That's why they have to wait to do it, because you can't officially designate a player a June 1st cut until the league year begins.

The Rooney's are much more giving than I am. From a business perspective, this is a foolish move on their part. They probably could of lowered Woodley's contract substantially if they had waited and put the pressure on him after the draft. Hey, good for them. More than what I would have done.
