Very good write up and would explain a great deal. Bud who is still extremely raw at his position seems to be really unsure and taking steps to eliminate his thinking and getting more direct action would really benifit him.

The 3-4 only works with an immovable object at NT - like a Steed or Hampton. Without a beast at NT it is fail at stopping the rush. Why this team doesn't realize this, and I do, is beyond me.

In other words, he lacks instincts, but this team thinks they can "coach him up" to fix it. Foolish.

No he lacks knowledge of his place in aNY given play and that makes him unsure and hesitant. VW is the same way but instead of waiting he just picks a hole and goes 100 mph at it. Bud went from having his hand in the dirt as a 43 end, to a olb in a 3-4 at Kentucky without out a position coach to teach him and then to a complex system at Pittsburgh and then last year was learning a quasi 4-3 backer position. Yeah let's dump on the guy for over thinking things. Watt had an easier time because he came from a similar system as the one the Steelers run and was more comfortable knowing his reads and trusting his instincts.

I still think Steelers should NOT have picked up the 5th year on Dupree.

Added a OLB through free agency.

    Good write up indeed.

Having Bud play more while thinking less will improve his overall game for sure. Bud is best when he is attacking one role. Having him do too much will ultimately stymie him from making plays.

In turn, the run defense can get better but much of this has to do with both Bud and T.J.

    We shall soon see.

Bud is wired to do basically one thing and putting him in a 3-4 at OLB doesn't work. I'm so sick of our "complex" system that takes players years to figure out. Simple would be so much better.

I'm sorry, enough of the excuses for Dupree. He needs to play to the 1st round potential we have been waiting for. And i'm tired ghost injury excuse as well. I was not in favor of them giving him the 5th year option, although it can be pulled if he plays subpar again. I also don't like the fact that Watt has to switch sides. Watt came in and lit it up in his rookie year.

Dupree best put it all together or be gone.

I really hope injuries were holding back tuitt and Dupree. If we can get a 2016 tuitt, a better Dupree lol, better burns, and with additions of Bostic + burnett, I think our defense could be top 32.

I've been saying this for years: Steelers should have started drafting for 4-3 after they lost Super Bowl XLV to Packers. Too little, too late. Brady, Rodgers and Brees own the 3-4... and the Steelers have to beat one or more of those QBs to win a Super Bowl. Roethlisberger will retire with 2 Super Bowl rings.

Not sign everyone. Sign SOMEONE. You can't tell me there was nobody out there to sign that can help this defense. While other teams addressed their weaknesses in free agency and the draft we signed a journeyman linebacker and then ignored our biggest weakness in the draft. All these sub packages won't mean **** if we can line up and stop somebody on first and second down.

I think it is funny when people say that the NT position is dead. The 3-4 teams that have "Hybrid" looks like the Ravens and Patriots still have really great NT's on their teams.

But, I think Heyward and Tuitt can move into a 4-3 rather easily. I would say it would have been even more likely with Shazier. Besides that, I think the only thing missing is an edge rush specialist who is physically large enough to stuff the run, like a Calais Campbell or Joey Bosa.

Looking at last season''s disaster in the courting of Hightower and two years ago the rehab of Justin Gilbert I like the approach of finding g the right guys rather than guys they liked predraft, or guys like Spence who knew the system. Given how much they were handcuffed by Bells tag amount not sure what could have been done and this was a weaker free agency class.

I think Hargrave would be better in a 4-3, too. I agree that they don't really have the pass rusher they would need. They also don't have a true middle linebacker. Williams is fine for a 3-4, but he doesn't diagnose plays or pursue laterally well enough for the middle in a 4-3. Bostic would be better, but he seems like a mediocre option at best.

I do think Burnett was a good signing. He is athletic enough, physical, versatile and intelligent. For a defense that constantly suffered from disastrous breakdowns in assignments, a guy like Burnett is a huge addition.

i fault butler for being the kind of coach that prefers a guy that knows the system over a guy that can do more for a team. he was like that when he was DLs LB coach too. thats why spence played and moats played last year. i believe thats why matakevich is running with the first team in OTAs over bostic at this point. he has always been a he's not ready type of coach and i think the higher ups made him get our younger guys on the field before he thought they were ready. he has always been a knowledge trumps athleticism type of guy to me, even back to timmons. foote, which knew the defense but was not a really good LB. we saw him making tackles 5-7 yds. down the field but knew the system and butler liked that. i have never really been that high on butler as a position coach or DC. just my opinion though.

I had a wait and see attitude, but now that I have "seen" I'm not sure I am all that impressed. DL had a cult-like following with players and they'd run through a brick wall for him. And while he may have stayed a year or two too long, he was a legit guru at one point. I don't sense either of those two things with KB.

I think KB was a loyal soldier for DL and the team, but that alone doesn't make you a great DC. Add in that it's somewhat a marriage with Tomlin, and I'm just not all that confident that the "Xs & O's" area is at a top-shelf level. I mean, after we lost Shaz, all hell broke out, dropping us to 31st on yards per rushing play. That is pathetic.

Who here remembers the days when rushing on this D was nearly impossible? And you can't blame a lack of resources going towards the D either: We have/had Shaz, Bud, Heyward, TJ, Haden, Burns and now Edmunds from the first round, plus Tuitt and Davis from the 2nd round; that's 7 first rounders and two 2nd rounders. We should be the '85 Bears.

So, what's the front 7 look like if we ran a 4-3? Is Heyward an end? Tuitt? Who would our DT's be? Hargrave and Tuey? Is Bud a OLB or DE? I don't know that we have the pieces, but I wish we did. I prefer a dominant 4-3, where the DL basically only rushes the QB and chases the ball carrier and that's it. Forget all this whooey louie, drop any and all players to pass defend...get over it. Just play football and forget trying to be so tricky. Plus, a 3-4 needs a beast at NT except this team won't draft one. Stupid.

They don't have the personnel for a 4-3. I'm guessing Dupree would have to play end, with Tuitt at the other end. Hargrave and Heyward would be the tackles. Bostic would have to play the middle, with Watt at one outside spot. Maybe Chickillo at the other? Williams really wouldn't fit in at all.

To be fair we lost shazier and matakevich at the same time. Big hit. TJ was in his rookie year which players usually hit a wall later in the season. Haden was in his first year in the defense and broke his leg. Edmund's hasn't played yet. Tuitt was injured. Davis and burns were only in their second year and first full year of starting. Lake was still the DB coach. Vince was in his first full year of starting. Hardly a veteran group as far as playing together and time in the league as starters. We still had Mitchell too. We had sensabaugh starting at one point. We had a disgruntled harrison. Spence was never the same player since his injury and was thrown into the fire as a starter off of his couch. Robert golden started at one point. Jj wilcox started at one point. Willie gay wasnt starter material anymore. Hardly the 85 bears lineup.

We have many things that we have improved on so far. At least on paper. Coaching, players with more experience not only in the league but playing time together. Injuries hopefully healed. Some old faces gone. Some new faces added. It will be a different defense and time will tell if it approaches that 85 bear defense but I'd just as easily hope for the 76 steeler defense if we are trying to reach goals.
