    https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/...ld-him-of-their-intent-to-use-transition-tag/

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a pitch to Le'Veon Bell to return to the team prior to the deadline to sign his 2018 franchise tender during their conversations with his agent on Tuesday, league sources said, but the running back was not interested in playing this season. The Steelers also informed Bell of their intent to place the transition tag on him in 2019, sources said, setting up a grievance with the NFLPA.

The Steelers brass very much wanted Bell back and made a concerted effort to explain how they planned to utilize him when conversations picked up with agent Adisa Bakari in the hours ahead of Tuesday's 4 p.m. ET deadline. Bell had until then to sign his tender and be eligible to play in the NFL this season. While Pittsburgh's locker room may not have been that receptive to Bell returning this season after his prolonged absence – as evidenced by the way players mocked the former All Pro and took items from his unused locker after Tuesday's deadline – the coaches and front office definitely wanted him back.

Please, just let him leave, end this, and let us get a draft pick as compensation. I don't want to deal with this for another offseason.

    Tic, tic, tic

Edit: I thought this was the old information. It actually adds new info to the conversation.

I either case, it looks like his maximum tag number would be the same as what it was this year. And possibly much lower.

I was expecting this as I posted elsewhere. I am in favor of this.

This whole Bell situation has just gotten to be too much around here. Was the guy a unique talent? Sure! Was he a top-5 player in the NFL? Yes

The show goes on and it could end up being another turning point for this storied franchise. As well as a blessing in disguise. James Conner is more of a prototypical "Steelers" RB. Bigger snow tires as well lol

Again this is something that Bell and his agent want. It will allow them to inflate his asking price out of fear that the Steelers will match.

I don't believe the Steelers will.let it drag on for anywhere near the length they have the last two years as the money saved can be used to do more earlier in the new season calendar.

    What’s the point?

A grievance would just be bickering about a $3 million difference in tender amount. That’s ~4 games’ pay this year, which apparently meant nothing to Bell.

It’s inevitable that some team will offer Bell crazy-high “gurnateed” money, and the Steelers won’t match that offer. So he’s leaving, and there’s no draft pick compensation under the transition tag.

Are they hoping he’ll sign a $14.5 million ($17.5 million?) transition tender, then they can trade him?

at this point and I wouldn't ever think that the Steelers operate in this fashion but the way this has played out I wouldn't blame them, it forces Bell and his agent to come back hat in hand and ask the Steelers if they want to match it. So it gives them sorta the final say.

I don’t see a point to using the transition tag on him. We’re not going to match a stupid offer. I wouldn’t even want him back if he gets a more modest offer like $14million/year with $10-20 million guaranteed. Why do it when Conner has proven that he can be the lead back? Why tie up 14.5 - $17.5 million in a waiting game when free agency starts? The money can be better spent than on Bell.

If this is the FO’s intent, I’m not seeing much likelihood of a better outcome than just parting ways and moving on. I’d rather see us re-up some of our good players and have some cash available at the start of the league year for a mid-tier free agent or two.

At the cost of essentially a high 4th-round pick.

They must be hoping to squeeze a higher pick out of a trade partner.

Damm there’s enough Bell threads already. Post in one of those. Matter of fact there was a thread on this exact subject already posted.
    Some people just need attention.

He's an elite talent.. any team including the rams could use him in some form or fashion.. that's not surprising...

Reports said they plan to match the offer. My guess is they want him back. They think the market isnt rhat high for him and he wont sign a deal they deem out of their price range and thus will match.

I'm certainly no advocate of Bell thread after Bell thread, but ... where's the thread that talked about the Steelers discussions with Bell & his agent on the day of the signing deadline?

I don't see the Steelers guaranteeing what's most likely a very large contract loaded with guarantees. Someone will bite. It only takes two bidders. I'm not even including the Steelers in the bidding war.

They will outbid the Steelers. The Steelers won't match it to overpay a disgruntled player who's actions worked to sabotage the team the year prior.
