Steelers signed QB Troy Smith to a reserve/future contract.
They're also believed to have inked former Lions third-round pick Derrick Williams. The 2006 Heisman Trophy winner Smith spent last season with the UFL's Omaha Nighthawks. We did extensive digging on Smith and could not even find any of his minor-league stats. With Charlie Batch, Byron Leftwich, and Dennis Dixon all free agents, Smith will have a shot to make the Steelers' 53-man roster in 2012. Behind Ben Roethlisberger, Smith and Texas A&M product Jerrod Johnson are Pittsburgh's only quarterbacks under contract at the moment. Jan 20 - 1:49 PM

This almost certainly spells the end for Batch and Dixon (who wants a chance to a starter somewhere) in Pitt. Not sure about Leftwich. If (big IF) he can stay healthy he is a great back up

Charlie didn't get hurt this year and did get us a win. I think he can go another year with how little action he sees.

Buh-bye Dennis Dixon. Still doesn't makes sense though for a BR backup, though.

He laid the wood to us about 4 years ago as the QB for the Ravens in the season finale. He may not be anything special, but I do believe he would make a quality backup.

A 6 ft tall journeyman QB with crappy stats in the few games he has played in? Sounds like more of a training camp arm than potential backup.

If Smith ever plays for the Steelers, he would be only the 2nd Heisman winner to ever play for the Steelers (Johnny Lattner was the first).

Smith's last job was playing QB for the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League where he took over for an injured Eric Crouch. It's amazing where some Heisman Trophy QB's end up.

In reality... We were pretty thin at backup qb...
Batch, who is reliable, but possibly injury prone(read, old, in NFL terms)...
Lefty, who wants to start, even tho no team wants him as a starter,
And Dixon, who apparentley never impressed the coaches enough to give him a real chance...
    We had to do something.
I am interested in the Johnson(name?) kid from Texas A&M, I never really knew about him, but his promo video looks good...
As a faithful Buckeye fan, I wouldn`t mind Troy Smith as a backup...
Would never expect more than that out of him, though...

I am not sure what to think of this quite yet, I don't ever
remember him having great success anywhere he has been.
The Steelers must be cleaning house at the Qb spot?

I try not to read too much into these early off-season signings. Can anyone remember any player signed like this that ever amounted to much for us?

They'll sign plenty of other "futures/reserves" contracts before the season. It gives them depth and extra bodies for OTA drills and training camp. Given that the Steelers are not looking for a starting qb, I wouldn't be surprised if they sign other qbs to the roster depending on what happens with Batch and Leftwich. If they lose one or both of them, they will need to have backups. And - they'll need backups who have learned the system, so they'll need them for OTAs.

Yes, this means the Dixon experiment has come to an end.
And probably that no QB will be drafted by us with a late pick this year.

    Good knowledge.

I don't have a problem with this signing. If he's camp fodder, so be it. If he shows enought to be a back up, that's great. He has (or used to have) athleticism (perhaps not quite as much as Dixon) and accuracy (far more than Dixon). Let's see how it works out...
