Not with a 1st or 2nd round pick, anyway, I agree. Otherwise why sign Trubisky at all? To mentor the rookie? Why? What is it about his career that screams "follow my lead young stallion"? Nothing. And you've already got two other guys, at least, to fill out the unit along with the rookie. So you don't need a fourth that you're going to pay that much to along with a high round deal.

If you invest that much in a 1st or 2nd round quarterback, you're going to play him inside of 2 seasons. So why invest what they did in Trubisky if that's your plan? It just wouldn't make sense.

Now, if a guy you really like as a down the road development is available in a later round, and you think he gives you the best return at that draft slot, then sure, they'd do that. But a 1st or 2nd round quarterback this year just doesn't add up now.

it depends if they think he needs some seasoning first. it's not really up to the qb to teach the rookie. trubisky is only signed for two years. mason one. haskins one. next year you would be back to a this year scenario. one qb under contract for one year. yes a rookie draft pick does make some sense if they are zeroed in on a certain one. haskins is here incase they don't get that certain guy. if not phase two of the process kicks in. maybe a later round guy to be that 4th arm in camp and then to move up either this year or next because the cupboard is bare. then we would look to the draft again. trubisky would have a year left and the rookie from this year or the draft pick would be poised to move up.

don't forget we have a ton of dead money we are paying out this year and a lot of that will be off the books next year. again freeing us up some cash to work with.

Trubisky starts. I don't see much of a competition. The question is imagine if Haskins beats out Mason for the #2. That would be interesting and funny .

Haskins or Mason will be cut, whoever loses out for QB2. Steelers will be able to grab another few mil. for cap.

so the QB battle in camp will be for #2 and Roland Rivers can be the #3 (his twitter says he is a "free agent QB")

Dropped him like a hot potato after learning he wouldn’t be the starter.

“You mean you aren’t going to be the starting QB next season??? Boy, bye”

Yes, guaranteeing Haskins a 1 year deal in 2022 with the Steelers worth 2.54 million.

I was hoping all offseason that the Steelers would not choose to guarantee Haskins anything this offseason. They did when they slapped the original rounder tender on him so he will be a member of the Steelers in 2022. They could have easily reclaimed him back as a standard RFA, and then had an option to cut him at the end of camp and not owe him anything. Did the front office really think someone was going to try to steal Haskins away?

On the other hand if they cut Mason it will save $3 million in cap space. If they keep Mason and cut Haskins it will cost them $5.5 million extra then the Haskins option.

Dobbs will be signed after the draft for the 4th camp arm. Steelers will open training camp with Trubisky / Rudolph / Haskins / Dobbs

What was with the Tua reference? Seemed weird to just pull Tua's name out of thin air to compare Trubisky too?

Still finishing up but man at around 9 minutes started talking about Brady. Literally always talks about him. Not sure if anything more Steeler related after that. Will try to zoom through at some point.

They should have shown Mitch vs. Lamar Jackson playoff stats. Mitch has performed dramatically better in the postseason.

because Tua was highly touted coming out of college. They compared Tia’s first two years to Trubisky’s first two years. Not sure how that’s pulling a name out of thin air.

Imagine if I got struck by lightning after I hit the lotto, lol.

I saw him play with The Redskins; there's a Jay Grude or any of the coaches, on his staff wanted to draft him; there's reason he got cut on his rookie contract and The Steelers didn't feel confident riding with him or Rudolph going into this season.

What they are not saying is most of them has thrown way more TDs in the same time.

Yes, but also have more opportunities. Using Tannehill and Mayfield as examples (simply because they have been consistent starters) they have similar trajectories to Mitch. Very similar TD and INT %. The point wasn't to say Mitch is the solution, it's just as a bridge quarterback, he has the potential to be just as good as guys that have won playoff games, one of which took a team to the AFC championship game.

Yes, not paying $2MM plus for a number 3. They could keep Dobbs for minimum wage.

Plus Cowherd had referenced Tua on his blind resume segment on his show earlier that day.

Haskins is guaranteed 2.54 million because they put the original rounder tender on him. If they cut him they save nothing and have 2.54 million in dead cap space.

If they cut or trade Mason it is a cap savings of $3 million with $1.04 in dead cap space.
