Surprised they got him for a vet minimum even though he is the starter?

Like what? It's what they had. They waited to long to get Boykin in there. He was the 2nd worst corner in the NFL.

Snack I disagree that if they bring Boykin back that they will not draft a corner high.

This secondary needs to cover and tackle better. It also works with the pass rush. They work together. Some blame the pass rush. Well wouldn't be nice not to give up a 300. This secondary as it was this season was subpar! And Blake was a big part of that.

I'm happy to see that we are keeping Cockrell. He is a work in progress, but I see upside there. He may even become a quality starter with more work on tackling.

On the not playing Boykin thing - my guess is that it had to do with having guys on the field who understood all of the assignments. I agree that Blake is not starter material, but I can't recall a situation where he was clearly out of place as opposed to just being beaten. Cockrell is a smart player, and may have learned the assignments very quickly.

Speaking of Boykin, there were times when he probably shouldn't have been on the field. He was probably our weakest defender in terms of physical strength, yet he was on the field on the goal line on Denver's TD drive. In fact, he had the running back fully in his grasp behind the line on the TD, but couldn't even hold him long enough for help to crash in.

As far as Boykin goes if he didn't understand the assignments why was he put on the field when we were down? Then time after time game after game when Boykin was on the field our defense played better? We start the game with Blake, he gets burnt our D gives up big chuncks then Boykin comes in and that all changes? I am not disagreeing with you just wondering like we all have the last half of the season how that worked? There was something else going on and I have no clue what but game after game Blake started and got toasted and Boykin came in to make our D stonger.....

As for Cockrell I am happy to see him get signed. I like this kid in the Shrine game a couple years back and was sad when we didn't draft him. Now he is here and has played well enough to be in our rotation.

Even when Boykin played well, next game there is Blake. Say what you want, for some reason the coaching staff likes Blake.

what wouldn't surprise me would be cockrell and cortez as the starters on the outsides and golsen as the slot. no gay. no boykin. blake as the backup and frey as another backup. grant moving to safety. minimal contract additions this way.

I could see this happening. I think they need to draft another CB to play outside and have Cockrell the first off the bench.

i think it mostly would come down to how long cortez stayed healthy. not a high rate of that the last couple of years. we could end up with cockrell and blake as the starters. golson isn't big enough to start on the outside for extended periods of time. i think frey will get a shot because he has some experience and knowledge of the defense and the NFL. they may use that as a more seasoned draft pick in essence.

Woof. I was hoping we would get better at CB, not worse. I'd be pissed if this was how it played out.

Sorry, I don't agree with ya on this Mac, I think the Steelers are all in for the next three years.
I think Cortez Allen will be cut. And Gay will be resigned.

I think not only has Allen not been healthy but when healthy he hasn't played good at all, he will be a June 1 cut.

Depends on whether Cortez is the guy he seemed to be when we resigned him, or the guy that we've seen since. I've written him off, but I don't get to see him at practice, and I don't know if his poor play was due to injury. It would be great if he can rebound. I'd be pretty surprised though.

We can sign Gay with the money we save from June cutting Cortez. I'd rather go that route, age be damned. Gay is a far superior player to Allen.

The problem with this is we won't have that money till June and Gay needs to be signed by then....we can use Allen's money for the draft class!

Cortez is as good as gone. How many years do you want to see this dud. Forget about him.
