So what does this mean for Wallace?

Is it jockeying and part of a larger plan to keep both?

Or is it a sign that they're fed up with 17 and plan on going on without him?

Maybe THIS IS what they've been offering Wallace. He balks, holds out, and they give it to AB and flip Wallace the bird?

Quite clearly a "we don't negotiate with hold-outs". They didn't even do it with Ward, he had to sign and come in before they worked it out.

So, it's better than I thought apparently. We didn't take an extra $1.66 Mil cap hit this year with his extension.

Mike Wallace are you watching? This is how you do business Steelers style. Show up. Shut up. Man up. And Mr. Rooney will pay up! This really makes me so happy. I think AB is the better of the 2 any way. But that's probably just me.

I think the Steelers have decided that they are fine with Brown, Sanders, and Cotchery as the three primary receivers. And quite frankly, so am I. That still is a great corp.

What a nice surprise! I was fearful we'd end up having to let AB walk next year after overspending on Wallace (if we did).

Whether it was intended as a message to Mike or not, I hope he hears it.

I love this move! Brown is definitely one of my favorite Steelers and definitely favorite WR of the group. I don't think this is a FU to Wallace though, I actually think this will help sign Wallace if he ever stops being a putz and gets to camp so negotiations can resume.

Here are the initial contract figures, from ProfootballTalk

Signed under the old CBA, Brown was eligible for a new contract after two seasons. Players drafted in 2011 and beyond must play three years before doing new deals.

The contract helps the Steelers avoid in 2013 another Mike Wallace-style standoff. Since both players signed three-year contracts, each player was eligible for restricted free agency.

Brown gets a signing bonus of $8.5 million plus a base salary of $540,000 in 2012. In 2013, he receives a $2.5 million roster bonus and a $2 million base salary.

In 2014, the salary increases to $6 million. It stays at $6 million in 2015 before increasing to $8.25 million in 2016. Finally, he receives $8.71 million in 2017.

So, kudos to Omar Khan and team once again. The contract is heavily stacked on the back end, with little additional hit the first year, and little hit next year relatively speaking. You'd have to assume that the FO has structured this contract in this manner to work towards a new deal with Mike Wallace.

Steelers Depot has a good breakdown of the terms (based on the PFT numbers). Here's what he has:

Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette confirms the Steelers will not be giving unsigned restricted free agent Mike Wallace a long-term deal after committing $42.5 million to teammate Antonio Brown.
Bouchette's colleague, Gerry Dulac, essentially said the same thing. The Steelers were already one of the NFL's tightest teams up against the salary cap, and the Brown deal increased his cap cost, if only slightly. Still, the Steelers won't be satisfying Wallace's long-term demands, and he'll have to sign his one-year, $2.742 million tender in order to play football in Pittsburgh. The organization could consider trading him before the season, or keeping him if he caves and franchise-tagging Wallace in 2013. Jul 27 - 8:24 PM

Ouch. Well, I guess they said let's lock up the one who's said he wants to be here and showed us he does.

In the back of my mind I was thinking they should or would be talking with Brown and maybe Sanders/etc soon since talks with Wallace were done for now. Too bad I didnt get that prediction out there like I did DD's signing hahah. That would have been awesome. But anyways...good for AB, and good for Pitt, only like 8.5 guaranteed so they could eventually part with him in the future if he didnt pan out or something happened and not cost the team a ton. They can also STILL sign/extend Wallace (they have the money to do it)...just because Ed B/etc says they won't be giving Wallace a long term deal doesn't mean they won't...until it comes out of Tomlin's/Rooney's/Colbert's mouth I won't believe it.

I love this deal and I like this from mdbates1: Show up. Shut up. Man up. And Mr. Rooney will pay up!. It just makes sense. That is a serious message sent to Wallace. I don't care what anybody saids. If Wallace doesn't get it now, he just doesn't care. I read earlier today in a question and answer interview with Kevin Colbert Buy Jim Wexell of Scout.com, that doesn't look good for Wallace:
Q: Haven’t you been consistent in your negotiating policy over the years?

KC: Yeah. That’s been the Steeler policy forever. To my knowledge this is the first time we’ve had a restricted player hold out. In the past it was usually a player who was under contract was holding out. There have been draft picks without contracts that have held out.

    Q: But that’s different, right?

KC: Yes, this is unique because it’s a restricted free agent that has a tender that can be signed and you can still negotiate

After this interview with Colbert, the organization goes out and signs AB to a $42.5 million contract for 5 years! What does that tell Wallace. YOU ARE NOT WHO YOU THINK YOU ARE!

IMHO, I think Wallace has made a big mistake buy not comming to camp, especially in the eyes of the fans. He is on the wrong side of the tracks with the fans and Steeler Nation. The only way he makes up for his sins is what mdbates said: Show up. Shut up. Man up. And Mr. Rooney will pay up! Plus one more thing PLAY HIS BUTT OFF AND HAVE A GREAT SEASON! Those are the only things that will save his bone headed mistake.

If he doesn't come in then they may try to trade him. If he sits out the first ten games then IMHO, his career as a Steeler is over. I don't think Tomlin will let him interupt the flow of the offense with the receivers that have been there from the beginning. He would just be riding the bench or getting into the game and being ignored by Ben, or just a decoy! That would be well deserved!

I just don't get it....so all along the Steelers could only afford one? If Wallace signed the deal....would everyone be saying...well Brown is gone next year?

If Wallace signed the deal I would be saying "I would rather have AB!" I still hope we get to keep Wallace though. Remember how a few years ago Ben was griping because he wanted a "tall" receiver? I bet Ben hopes we keep him too. I just think that AB is a better ALL AROUND receiver AND he gives us GREAT value on Special Teams. We got more than just a receiver if you really think about it.

Unless the Steelers make some very hard decisions(Hampton, Foote) and I doubt they will
this maybe the end of Mike Wallace as a Pittsburgh Steeler. Lets go Tony Clemons.
If I was Mike Wallace I would fire my agent, he may have cost you a chance to be on the greatest
football franchise for a a long time that there is. You could have had the 42 just like Brown.
Obviously the reports were right that they were asking for Fitz money, and Wallace is not
    in Larry Fitzgeralds league.

Yeah, it would seem that way, though I don't enough about the facts and figures really.

I'm still not buying - though happy to be proved wrong - that Wallace's approach to negotiating relates to our on-field play and needs. I still think we could do with having Wallace play for us, and I still hope he shows up for camp in the next few days.

For those talking about a trade - what would we honestly get for him? Every team would know we want rid. We'd be lucky to get as "good" a deal as we got for Holmes.

fairly certain that MT said during the offseason that Brown won't be on ST anymore because he's too valuable as WR.

The Rooneys and the Steelers organization don't play. They run the team and one player won't change that. Congrats Mr. Brown for handling your business the correct way and that's why you got rewarded.

It was Mike Wallace who was behind the holdout, not his agent Buss Cook.
As soon as Wallace said he wanted Larry Fitzgerald money(in which I was laughing my @ss off) I knew it would probably come to this.
Wallace is a deep threat, nothing more. As Coach Tomlin said, A one trick pony.
Antonio Brown is a complete wide reciever. And this Steeler fan is happy it was him and not Wallace.
You don't play games with the Steelers Brass. This is how this organization has thrived through the years.
The second he didn't report they pulled the offer off the table and shut the door on Wallace.
It's obvious that he will not be a Steeler next season.
The team will roll on without...
    Go Steelers...
