This + not cutting Polamalu = bye clark & no FS on 1st round?
I'd put my money now on a CB as our 1st rounder

 

i thought they might keep him around. with the talk about bringing clark back for 1 year, I thought allen knows the defense too and is a cheaper option to teach the young guys. troy in his role may not have been the best guy to teach them deep coverage. I could really see them getting a guy like boston later now.

 

This might mean the Steelers will look to draft a SS instead of a FS this year too. I'm assuming if Troy gets extended that Thomas becomes the starting FS? Allen as a good back up. We will need a new starting SS in a few years, so maybe that is where we are looking in the draft.

Glad we kept some depth but not crazy about it being Allen tbh.

 

I told you guys Thomas is a great cover man and more than capable of being a FS. yes dion bailey would be a good SS playing a similar role to troy ILB/SS. right up his alley. allen knows the defense and is insurance back there as well as a better teacher of the spot then troy would be to them. they have said for years any safety the steelers have can play both spots or at least they know both spots, so Thomas is not really a stretch there. anyway, i'd love to see bailey here. he makes plays.

A year ago I would have agreed with you. However, Allen played well this season. Obviously not starter-well, but reliable-back-up-well.

 

I still feel we are going to pick up a defensive guy in the 1st round, however, I'm not exactly sure what position that player will be. My gut tells me it will be a defensive line guy but my heart is hoping for a shut-down corner.

It's a good signing solid depth at the safety position give me Allen over Ryan Clark.
