Only the first 2 picks in the second round have signed their contract. Both players received fully guaranteed contracts, now the rest of the 2nd round picks are all holding out because they want fully guaranteed contracts as well.

If the league is going to dictate the amount of the 4 year contract, I guess the players are going to fight back and demand fully guaranteed contracts.

Why almost none of the NFL's second-round draft picks have signed contracts
The only two second-round picks that have signed so far are the first two picks from the round, Cleveland Browns linebacker Carson Schwesinger and Houston Texans wide receiver Jayden Higgins.

Both players — and their teams — were trendsetters in a way by agreeing to fully guaranteed contracts, something that was previously never really an option or consideration for second-round picks.

I maybe missing something in the actual financial distribution of the cap, and money, but why would you guarantee the whole contract to a rookie 2nd round pick if You didn't have to??

As an owner you don't have to guarantee their contract, an as a player the contract you sign will begin paying out with the 1st regular season game.; signing bonus not included.

Unsigned players cannot be fined for missing training camp or Preseason Games.

    FYI: Training Camp and Preseason.
    • First-Year Players:
Receive $1,850 per week during the 2024 preseason, increasing to $2,000 per week in 2025 and 2026, according to Pro Football Network.

This might be a result of NIL money. These are second round picks which probably means that they were very successful in college and they may have a nice little nest egg sitting in the bank. That may give them a better bargaining position (in their opinion) where they feel that they can force the issue. If they get it, it means that no matter what they are set for life. Pull a Joe Theismann? The money still comes. Decide that you are going to half ass everything and collect a paycheck? The money still comes. Nursing an injury that the NFL does not know about? The money still comes.

Those 2nd round contracts are about 6-10 million plus signing bonuses. Pick 33 should be getting almost 4 million in a signing bonus and a contract worth about 10 million. 14 million in guaranteed money is enough to be set for life and live extremely well as long as they are not total buffoons with their money. Give me 14 million at 25 years old and some good financial advice (that I follow....lol) and I will never work, live well and hit 50 years old with 50 million+ in net worth (hopefully a lot more than that).

Look at Roman Wilson. He had his signing bonus and a bit under 1 million in guaranteed money. If I read it right, he got his money in year 1 even though he was injured before the season. If he did not have guaranteed money, he could have been put on IR and receive a reduced salary. He could even be released I believe. Guaranteed money changes all of that risk for the player.

well first off cleveland hasn't been too smart with it's money for awhile. teams will have to put some type of incentive clauses to go with this if it continues i would think. you must do this or that or reach this or that as provisions to getting your money guaranteed. so many games played or something. levy fines of some sort for games missed or practices. soon, 3rd and 4th and 5th round picks will try to follow. where will be the cut off?

One would think the browns learned a lesson about fully guaranteed contracts

When Cleveland is a trend setter you know it’s a bad idea

Joey Porter was taken first in the second round and his contract was almost fully guaranteed

But he was actually the 32nd player taken which normally would have been first round

    Fit what that is worth

Yep. His agent was smart enough to get most of a 1st round pick contract. Though I don't see where the Steelers set any precedent given the nature of the pick.

This was what I was thinking also, but I really don't understand the whole money situation, and so didn't want to say it.

i remember this happening years ago with someone. they wanted first round money and the team wanted to pay second round money. i don't remember who it was or what the final result was at this point. i can see both sides.
