Per adam schefter on twitter, right before OT Jake Long agreed to his terms with the rams, the steelers apparently made an attempt to get him to Pittsburgh! Obviously it did not happen, but is this real life? Had no idea we were even interested or how we could even afford him.

I dont know how to post the tweet unfortunately...

It's weird that we've been talking to some of these big ticket guys supposedly.

Obviously Long would have been a day 1 starter, so with this info, is this showing that Colbert and the coaches are worried about either Adams or Gilbert? And the same goes with the other big names such as Dumervil, to me it seems like the steelers are definitely not thrilled with who we have in place for starting roles at OT and OLB.

They inquired about many players during the FA period. Most of the talks that take place are not publicized.

I think with media now there's very little that goes on that's not publicized.

Yea these days everything is public, and the media is impressive with guys like Schefter who know whats going on as soon as it happens, and he is rarely wrong. Teams more or less have to put up smoke screens to hide their hands because the media has so much inside info.

This really makes me wonder if we haven't been talking to Revis. LOL.

Schefter and all these guys are just buddy buddy with the agents...that how they get all their info.

I'm worried about LT too. Gilbert is just alright and Adams didn't play great last year as a pass blocker, but at least Adams has to potential to make major improvements...

There are hundreds of phone calls that take place during the FA period. Not all of the inquiries are publicized.

I'm sure what we do is put out "feelers" to see what kind of contract it may require to get some of these guys to sign, hoping that maybe one of them may want to sign a bargain contract with a team with a rich tradition and history and who is typically making a run at a Super Bowl every year. Once our FO determines that they are chasing the dollar and it won't be realistic to sign them, I'm sure all communication ceases at that point, but we owe it to ourselves to at least inquire.

I agree, teams only do a disservice to themselves if they at least don't ask. There are 32 teams. There were over 100 free agents this year. Conservative estimate is that each team makes 50 inquiries. That's 1600 inquiries. Bigger names get more attention.

Thanks TTF, you da man! I wonder what he means by "made a play" for long? Did we just contact him, or did we try to schedule a visit before he signed with St. Louis, or did we actually try to offer him a deal of some sort? With how capped strapped we are I doubt we could offer him anything more than a few bucks and a couple of primantis bros sandwiches .....

Sounds like they did more then inquire about Long, this is not standard operating procedure for the Steelers. We're seeing a little different attitude from them this off season. This is why they probably didn't make an offer to Lewis, they have Cortez to step in and probably want the money to plug a hole elsewhere.

    This!

Just like it was said on the Depot ( http://www.steelersdepot.com/2013/03/report-steelers-had-interest-in-new-rams-t-jake-long/ ) things like this get thrown around a lot...you never know the interest level until a guy actually visits....plus what team wouldn't want to look into bettering their team.

I mean Long is better than any of the OTs they have right now...so why wouldn't they look into him. It doesnt mean they do not have faith in or do not like Gilbert or Adams.

    Yup.
Im sure the Steelers FO isnt run like this message board. "What about Jake Long?" "Hell no! He's going to want too much money."
Im sure due process dictates that they at least call to see what his demands are regarding a contract. Its the only responsible thing to do.

You guys think Shefter is reporting teams "due process"? I think this one is a little more then that, they are also looking into Dumervil, I can't recall any offseason recently that had the Steelers linked to big ticket FA's.

Adam Shefter has just tweeted that the Steelers front office is in fact run like this message board, and Roger Goodell is going to send a memo to the other 31 teams requiring that they also be run like their fan message boards.

Hopefully that doesn't mean being run like the old board - very unlikely new guys could get brought in; new posters often limited in their contribution; a few long-time warriors forming the backbone of the board but with many promising posters moving on to better, glitzier boards?

    Wait, hang on...

Sometimes I wonder how often, if ever, pursuits like this are started to light a fire under current players - or to drive the price up for another team. Would the steelers say they are interested in Dumervil to drive the price up for Baltimore?
