Allowing a PRO BOWL CENTER to walk for a 3rd round comp pick? Huh? Let me get this straight, ALL the years we have had awful Olin's, we finally seem to have a good one coming in, and people want to break it up already? Pouncey is a kid with upside and time on his side, and some would rather he walk, and take someone else who could easily flop and put us back 3 years. I just don't get it? Like I said, when we start running the ball, and Ben has more time this offense could be fun to watch. Exactly how much does another ring cost these days?

Just as Steel Elvis commented on, I will rank
him in the 8 or 9 slot of top centers. So
that is where he should be paid.I have no problem extending the man but not to make
him the highest paid center in the league.

I agree that the structure of the deal is team friendly - for a deal of that magnitude. I just don't like the amount of cap dollars that he's gong to tie up starting in 2015 as compared to his level of play. I think he's a solid center overall, but not a top center. I'm especially concerned about him in pass protection, and that's really the #1 thing I want out of our center. Yes, Velasco and Wallace were downgrades in run blocking (especially Velasco), but I thought they each did a better job than Pouncey at keeping the middle rushers out of Ben's face.

If this deal peaked out at around $8 million instead of $9.6 and $10.1 in '16 and '17, I'd feel better about it. I just think the money could have been better spent at other positions and on other players' extensions (Heyward and Allen to name 2).

The cap is going to rise considerably, wouldn't be to worried about that.

Totally disagree that he isn't a top center but its a debate thats been beaten to death.

Steelers should have picked Russell Bodine in the 4th

That man will be starting this season as a rookie and kickin butt

could of had him as a swing player for oline and let Pounce BOUNCE after this year

big mistake with this contract IMO

By no means am I an expert in salary cap / contract issues. To me, they should have some protection to get out based on Pouncey's inability to stay on the field. Money seems excessive when you consider his past body of work (to me as an average fan). I really don't see interior linemen being able to add that much value for the dollar compared to some other positions. Part of the problem I think is that Velasco did fill in admirably last year without any noticeable drop off in production. The FO is clearly more knowledgable but, to me it feels more like a Woodley signing than a Bettis signing.

Only full regular season he finished without a missed game, 2010, when he missed the Super Bowl. And talk of being a "Pro Bowl" center? Please, why do some people still insist that being "Pro Bowl" caliber is based on anything other than a popularity contest? Pouncey was well loved out of college and into the NFL, not necessarily for his performance. I call it the "Tim Tebow" effect.

He's part of the reason the running game suffered. They also scrapped the zone blocking after Pounce went down so I'd say there was a noticeable drop off.

Pouncey was also All Pro as well.

Idk why, but it is awfully common around these parts to call Pouncey an "average" center. It seems like it's only our fans who do it too lol I do think his pro bowls and all-pro honors hold some weight. You only can afford to keep so many "pro bowl caliber" players on a single team. When you already have one on your team, you should try to keep him on your team. It's that simple. Plus he's 25, and we really didn't overpay. Every new contract for a high caliber player makes them highest paid at their position (see Flacco, Ryan, Haden, etc.) it's just the way the NFL is anymore.

You just can't let one of the few top caliber guys we do currently have for a 3rd round pick. In all honesty would you trade Pouncey to another team for a conditional 3rd? No, you wouldn't cuz that's stupid. That's how you wind up with NO talent instead of some talent.

I like the SEC guy we got, and I'm a buckeye fan. more to come from UNC, so I wouldn't throw stones quite yet. the ACC has it's share of troubles too. anyway, I'm a lot happier with johnson than I would have been with bodine. the LT ability puts him farther ahead for me.

he was a problem at school and he is a jerk plain and simple
Doherty should have punched him in the face
    WOODY HAYES STYLE

the Raleigh newspaper has been gunning for the HEELS for awhile
the things that go on in ACC land are Peanuts compared to the bigten and sec
ncaa is too freaking scared to hurt an sec team
    Newton
    Satan Saban
    Oscar Meyer
    Spurrier
the list goes on and on argh...

hell and don't tell me Calipari at Kentucky is a saint
he's been caught twice before with his recruiting

Donovan in florida has countless issues with his players
but the good ol' boy traditions countinue down in Dixie and the entire SEC

    back to point

pounce is not worth the contract

    and I've stated before
I bet he won't make it through the season without limping towards the sidelines

all the major schools are just as bad as another. if they truly looked hard they would find the same things everywhere. it's almost a joke from what it was intended to be. greed plain and simple and every thing that goes with it. enough of that and I can't say much because I'm a big cane fan too and have been for many years. I always liked UNC and they're players though.

I had my worries about pouncey too. that was because of the knee. the surgically repaired ankles seemed to be alright, but we still haven't seen him in pads with that knee yet. there were also drills he didn't do at OTA's because of it. it makes me feel better having Wallace and Johnson here though. like last year, heath was back, but heath wasn't back.

:this!: Pouncey is worth every penny of that contract, they actually freed up cap space with that deal. Velesco and Wallace can't do a fraction of the things Pouncey can, he can play in any scheme, they can't. They are supposed to let him walk? You don't let players like that get away if you can help it, especially when you only have people with half his talent to replace him. As far as injuries go, tell his teammates not to cave in his knee, he only missed a handful of games in 3 years before last seasons injury.

The Tim Tebow Effect - when you draft a player named Pouncey that played with Tim Tebow in college, and for the rest of the offseason anytime the experts on TV are supposed to talk about Pouncey (like the instant he's drafted, and when you're examining the Steelers' draft), they instead use the opportunity to talk about Tim Tebow.

I've read that on PFF too - that Pouncey has a bogus reputation as a top center because he was handed it as a draftee and it simply carried over into his career. That's bull****. He was as ignored as every other rookie when compared to the Ndamukong Suhs and Tim Tebows and Dez Bryants. He was just another pick to briefly mention before getting back to Tebow. Hell, Pouncey wasn't even the most hyped interior offensive lineman of that draft. That was Mike Iupati, who went one pick sooner. Pouncey's rep began when he got on the field. He outplayed his competition to a near embarrassing degree, straight up ending Hartwig's career. Then he outplayed every other Steeler lineman, and most of the league. Then people started saying he was the best, or almost the best. Then PFF started *****ing about Pittsburgh's YPC and trotting out red font, and grading him the same as David Johnson. So now he's overrated. Thanks guys, but I'm gonna go with myself (and Colbert and Munchak and Khan) on this one. Not only do I trust their talent evaluation more, but I trust them to notice a dropoff in play more.

    WOW
who took the last piece of bacon?

    C,M,K
    is who you're teaming with?

    the three stooges?

I can't wait for two of them to pack their bags and get the hell out of the burgh

Munchak gets a pass because he's been here all of two days

Khan is going to the jags next year

Colbert will be (hosting latenite) served his walking papers after this horrendous draft AGAIN!!!
    like Forrest says AGAIN!

    Pounce isn't worth an ounce

    of salt

    blah
wish Pouncey would go hang out in Miami with his brother
AND LET DEXTER TAKE CARE OF HIM

I don't want my team looking stupid like the PATS did with Aaron

    like I stated before

I PRAY THERE IS A CLAUSE
